Hansee Site

Hansee Site was established in autumn 2022. Initially, the site was covered in English ivy up to the footpath, which has since been pushed back. However, several invasive species remain to clear – persistent ivy, a large Himalayan blackberry thicket, hidden English holly, and more.

The site is mostly shaded under many large trees, including a giant sequoia, several horse-chestnut trees, and various pines and oaks. It was and still is dominated by snowberry, osoberry, and Oregon grapes. Four batches of smaller plants and ground covers were successfully installed from 2023 to 2024, from yarrow to wild ginger!

Making plans for this site comes with a unique combination of challenges, from the thick layer of leaf litter that quickly covers smaller plants to the gravel in the sunny spot’s soil. This presents fascinating learning opportunities for both managers and volunteers! The location of the site by dorms and footpaths also puts it in an important position for student accessibility and outreach.
