Sambucus cerulea Germination Trials #1

Grace Christie – Fall 2025

This project fulfills the requirements set by the Advancing Puget Sound Native Plant Propagation project, which is a grant funded by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and helps to fund the SER-UW Native Plant Nursery. Blue elderberry, or Sambucus cerulea, is one of the species on the WSDA’s list of focus species. This quarter, Grace conducted literature review to determine ideal germination conditions for blue elderberry, then carried out scarification and began stratification. She will monitor the seeds for germination through winter and spring quarter.
