DOWNTOWN PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDATION AND HOW DOES IT ADDRESS THE CRISIS?

We propose to build a mixed-use development project containing a public K-5 elementary school, retail and office uses, and multi-family housing. This solution helps solidify downtown Seattle as a neighborhood and bolsters a sense of community and belonging, and will make downtown more attractive to residents and families.

WHO WILL THIS SERVE?

This solution will serve current and future families living in and near the downtown core.

WHY IS THIS THE BEST SOLUTION?

As COVID-19 recovery continues, the city of Seattle has a critical opportunity to draw more than just tourists back downtown; attracting people back to these areas should include residential families and children. Revitalizing the downtown area will require sustained investment throughout the coming years, and this project provides a longer term solution in line with the city’s goals.

WHAT IS THE TIMELINE TO MOVE FORWARD?

The proposed mixed-use development would be developed using a public-private partnership model. The private developer would be responsible for land acquisition and  project development, while the public sector (Seattle Public School) provides equity with a purchase or a long-term lease agreement of the public school space.
