Tateuchi East Asia Library: News and Projects

Preserving TEAL’s Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Collections

The Tateuchi Foundation has provided the Tateuchi East Asia Library with a grant of $30,000 over three years to create preservation housing for items from its special collections and newly cataloged “hidden treasures” collections. The latter, which include many mid-20th century materials, have been made discoverable to users over the past decade through major retrospective cataloging projects, enabled by generous support from the Tateuchi Foundation, community donors and grant agencies. Such projects included assessments of preservation needs.

This new Tateuchi grant will allow us to carry out any necessary preservation work, ranging from item-specific repairs to new housing for bound and unbound materials. The emphasis will be on rare items with high research value that are physically at risk. Projects will be planned and executed in collaboration with the UW Libraries’ Preservation Services staff. We anticipate that this gift will also help attract additional support for preservation from other funding sources. This important work preserves and makes accessible TEAL’s invaluable resources and maintains the unique strength of its collections.
