A Short-Lived Summer Celebration (just today)

Hey there, Huskies!

Congratulations on making it to the last day of classes! The weather seems to also be in a celebratory mood, with sunny skies and high temperatures near 70 in the Seattle metro area. Clouds are expected to move during the afternoon and evening hours, with an overnight low in the low 50s.

Just as any last day of classes celebrations are quickly stopped by finals week next week, the warm weather is going to be stopped by an atmospheric river headed towards us this weekend. We could see rain as early as tomorrow morning, but any shower activity tomorrow will be scattered and minimal compared to the main event starting Sunday.

The atmospheric river Sunday will bring some much-needed rainfall all across western Washington. By Tuesday afternoon, most of the Puget lowlands will have rain totals over an inch, with higher totals at the coast and in the mountains. For a bit of context, the average rainfall for the entire month of June at Sea-Tac is 1.45 inches. We will be getting almost an entire June’s worth of rain in this event alone!

Given the amount of rain headed our way, National Weather Service Seattle has issued a Hydrologic outlook for areas near the Skagit, Snohomish, Skykomish, White, and Skokomish Rivers as there is risk for river flooding. The NOAA Weather Prediction Center’s excessive rain outlook for Sunday and Monday places most of western Washington in the marginal risk category, meaning that isolated flash flooding, especially in flooding prone areas, is possible.

Since today is the last day of classes, today is also the last day of our usual Dawgcast blogging schedule. We’ll still be blogging, tweeting, and filming videos, but less frequently. Things will pick back up in the first week or two of the 2024-2025 school year. Thanks for all of your support this year, and we hope to see you all back in the fall!
