A Stormy Start to Week 7

By: Joseph Renalds

Hey Huskies, I hope you have been having a good weekend.

The weather this afternoon is a bit more pleasant today after a chilly and rain filled Saturday. Temperatures are sitting in the mid-50s under partly cloudy skies. It really is starting to feel like November out there, and this is going to continue as we start the week.

Taking a look at the satellite this afternoon, we can see a storm developing offshore (red circle). The low pressure center will move inland over Haida Gwaii (yellow circle) on the coast of British Columbia, but the fronts to the south will move into western Washington on Monday morning.

We will see a burst of heavy rain and gusty winds tomorrow morning as the fronts move through the region. Rainfall totals will be between 0.25 and 0.5 inches and wind gusts could get over 35mph. So as you are heading to class in the morning, make sure to grab that raincoat before heading out and charge your devices in case of a power outage.

After this front moves through by lunch time, the rain will stop and we will even see some sunbreaks after a quite active weather morning.

The rest of the week looks fairly uneventful weather wise here in western Washington without any significant chance for rain until next Saturday. So if you still need to run your ballot down to the box before Tuesday night, you don’t have to worry about the rain.

Speaking of Election Day, I would like to go over what the weather is looking like around the rest of the country. Don’t worry, no political predictions here. While it is going to be calm weatherwise in the Pacific Northwest, the middle of the country will be dealing with the same trough that brought us rain the last several days.

By midday Tuesday, a typical November midlatitude storm system will be bringing disturbed weather to Michigan and Wisconsin. The associated cold front will stretch southward into Texas bringing with it the potential for thunderstorms. The southeast is looking mostly dry with temperatures getting into the 70s. The Mid-Atlantic, including Pennsylvania, also looks dry with temperatures getting into the 70s. It is looking dry in the Southwest as well with temperatures getting near 70 degrees in Phoenix and Las Vegas, and near 50 degrees in Reno.

Have a great rest of your weekend Huskies!
