AIG Shadowing Program

Shadowing an anesthesiologist is a great way to learn if anesthesiology is a right specialty for you. AIG offers shadowing opportunities for UWSOM medical students across WWAMI. Students who are interested in learning about the field of Anesthesiology are welcome to sign up to shadow through our online calendar. Our hope for this program is to give you a good experience in exploring the field, and provide you with connection as well as guidance in pursuing anesthesiology.

Preceptorships- MS1 & MS2

Preceptorships are a great way for 1st and 2nd year students to become familiar with the field of anesthesiology. Students are expected to “shadow” with an attending anesthesiologist on 8 separate occasions for at least 4 hours.

One of the great things about precepting in anesthesiology is that there is ample opportunity to review and apply the anatomy, physiology, and psychology learned in the classroom and even get lots hands on experience.

To sign-up for a preceptorship in anesthesiology, contact:

Rotations/Clerkships- MS3 & MS4

UW offers a 2-week basic anesthesia clerkship and a 4 week advanced anesthesia clerkship (APC), both available in multiple locations. More information about the clerkships can be found at the UW Anesthesia Department Website. The most updated course numbers and descriptions can be found in the Clerkship Catalog. As of 2021, the Advanced Anesthesia rotation counts as an APC, but there is no anesthesia sub-i. It is recommended that you do your sub-i in another area such as ICU (SICU, MICU, or Neuro ICU) , surgery, or cardiology.

Doing a rotation in Anesthesiology is a great way to decide if Anesthesiology is for you, learn a lot about the specialty, gain lots of hands on experience, meet residents and faculty, and potentially obtain a letter of recommendation.

Information on MS3 and MS4 clerkships at UW is available here.

Information on away rotations can be found on the respective school’s website.
