Executive Student Leadership
Bella Reichardt
President
Bella is a Bioengineering PhD student studying the reversibility of dilated cardiomyopathy in the laboratory of Dr. Jennifer Davis. She received her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin before coming to Seattle and has experience with stem cell and regenerative medicine technologies. As a member of BioEngage, Bella hopes to create new industry partnerships in academia to promote development of new technologies and therapies.
Sarah Nick
Vice President
Sarah is a Bioengineering PhD student in the labs of Dr. James Bryers and Dr. Valerie Daggett. She earned her BS in biomedical engineering from Columbia University where her undergraduate research focused on studying Mycobacterium abscessus in an effort to understand its natural resistance to antibiotics through biofilm formation. She is continuing her study of biofilms, now in the context of implanted devices and nosocomial infections with a focus on biomaterial and chemical prevention strategies. As a graduate lead for BioEngage, Sarah hopes to continue to strengthen relationships between the UW BioE community and the biotechnology industry and to help establish new connections, particularly with local Seattle companies.
Shane Gilligan-Steinberg
Graduate Lead
Shane is a Bioengineering PhD student in the Lutz Laboratory with a research focus on the development of microfluidics and isothermal amplification technologies for point of care diagnostics in low resource settings. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University where he did research in computational biology and cardiac fluid dynamics. Shane hopes to foster connection and close collaboration between research and industry that can bring vital healthcare technologies to the point of care. As a member of BioEngage, he hopes to promote engagement between students at UW and the local biomedical industry.
Ioana Veras-Tobos
Graduate Lead
Ioana is a bioengineering PhD student studying engineered biomaterials for mucosal immunity and drug delivery in the laboratory of Dr. Kim Woodrow. She has a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Tufts University and spent several years working in industry at a start-up developing ultrasensitive diagnostics. Her time in industry showed her academic-industry partnerships are pivotal to develop new technologies with the most potential to improve health outcomes. Through BioEngage, she hopes to continue bridging academia and industry, helping students connect with opportunities and gain exposure to industry options and career paths.
Rhett Britton
Graduate Liaison
Yuto Koga
Graduate Liaison
Marisa Tsunoda
Media & Communications Manager
Marisa is a junior undergraduate student studying bioengineering with a concentration in nano and molecular engineering. She is currently a part of the Zalatan and Carothers Labs, researching bacterial signalling pathways and CRISPR-Cas gene regulation. Being the first in her family to pursue a career in STEM, she joined the BioEngage team to gain further insight on the hiring end of the industry and to be a bridge for resources for her peers and future students.
