Our logo was designed by Roger Fernandez (Lower Elwha) and is based on the concept of the basket and the ancient symbology found in Puget Salish basket designs.
A basket is a weaving of many diverse elements; tree bark, grasses, and roots. These different fibers are woven together to create a harmonious whole; a container that can hold medicine, food, tools, clothing, and supplies. Just as our work can be made of many diverse ideas and elements that create a container of knowledge, dreams, and ideas, and wisdom. And that each of us is made of many diverse elements that define us, our thoughts, values, philosophies, and beliefs.
In this design, there are plant designs that cause us to reflect on the use of plants and the teachings they can bring to us. A belief of the Elders is that “the plants are our greatest teachers. All the knowledge we need to live in the world is in the plants.” These designs are ancient, woven by our Coast Salish ancestors for millennia, and passed down to us.
