Instrument Handling: Forceps
Forceps:
Forceps are used for grasping and stabilizing tissue. There are many different kinds of forceps, used in different situations. They can be more or less traumatic to tissue depending on the design of tips, including whether the forceps are toothed or not.
Forceps should be held like a pencil. This maximizes control and stabilizes the tip.
Common Error:
A common error is to hold the forceps incorrectly which reduces control and also moves the pivot of the action to the elbow which increases tremor.
