*The annual allowance is paid in equal increments in each bi-monthly paycheck. This allowance is included in the total compensation listed above.

Additional compensation:

  • $450/year for Professional Development
  • $915 reimbursement for Step 3 exam fee
  • $391/year for medical license
  • UW does not currently provide a moving stipend for residents, though is an active point of discussion through the union.

Of note, Washington does not have a state income tax. There are opportunities for “moonlighting” during R2 and R3 years.

Insurance: Major medical, dental, basic life insurance, accident and long-term disability plans are provided to all house staff and their dependents through the University of Washington.

Retirement plans: The UW Retirement Plan is a fully portable, tax-deferred, defined contribution plan. Employee contribution is based on age and is matched 100% by the university.

Vacation: Residents have 4 weeks of vacation per year (typically divided as four one-week vacations, though interns have a two-week vacation), as well as 4 days off for their holiday of choice (can be federally recognized or not). Additionally, interns have 5 days off at the end of intern year (also known as furlough). 

Union: Residents are a part of the Resident & Fellow Physician Union – Northwest (RFPU) which offers additional benefits. RFPU has negotiated for resident contract changes over the last few years. Residents also enjoy tuition exemptions and childcare benefits. 

 

Program Perks

Meals: Lunch is provided almost daily at noon conference. Additionally, residents get money on their hospital badge to spend at the cafeteria for every day they are scheduled to work.

Parking and Transportation: All residents have free parking at Seattle Children’s. There are several locked bike cages, and there is a bike shop located at the hospital, where residents can get an annual tune-up for freeResidents also get a free ORCA card, with access to the Link rail and bus system throughout Seattle and King County.

Support in the hospital: We have Care Coordinators for each inpatient team who help with obtaining records from outside hospitals, setting up follow-up appointments, and ordering DME for patients. Each team works with a social worker, pharmacist, and nutritionist who participate in rounds and interdisciplinary patient care. We also have intake specialists in the ED who help with medication reconciliation.

Orientation:A paidorientation prepares new residents for training at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington. It is also an amazing opportunity to get to know your co-interns!

Training and Memberships: PALs and NRP training are provided free for all residents. Membership in the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) is paid for each year, with complimentary subscriptions to Pediatrics, Pediatrics in Review, PREP The Curriculum (board review questions) and other publications.
