Safety & Security in the Library

Our library is a multipurpose space in which students, faculty, and the community converge to engage in learning, research, and discovery. We welcome our patrons to use the Snoqualmie Learning & Research Commons and the Tioga Library Building safely.

Lately, we have noticed a number of patrons leaving their personal belongings on chairs or by a computer while they use a restroom, check for print jobs, or browse the bookshelves. While thefts have not recently been reported, please remember that the UW Libraries are public spaces, and, as in any public space, you should be mindful of your actions. Please don’t let UWT be a target for crime!

Tips for safe library use

Keep your items with you at all times. We understand the hassle of taking your backpack and laptop with you to the restroom, but thieves look for this opportunity to snag your gear and disappear in a matter of seconds.

Speak to library staff if you feel unsafe. Let us know if something doesn’t seem right. We can help by ensuring that library users are adhering to the UW Tacoma Library Code of Conduct, or by asking our security team to be a visible presence.

Causes for concern

Unattended packages. Please notify a librarian or staff member immediately if you see an unattended item in the library, such as an ownerless backpack or bag.

Weapons. According to the UW Tacoma Library Code of Conduct, “Threatening, intimidating, or disorderly behavior of any kind will not be tolerated, including verbal abuse, threats or acts of violence, harassment, or carrying or displaying weapons.”

Unusual behavior. The library is committed to providing an environment conducive to study. If you see behaviors that are not consistent with our commitment, please notify library staff immediately.

Missing items. Let library staff know immediately if you have lost a personal item. We will check Lost and Found and, if necessary, help you file a report with UW Tacoma Campus Safety & Security.

Not a cause for concern

Non-students in the library. The University Libraries welcome the community to use our resources for learning, research, and discovery, so long as they follow the library’s code of conduct.

Disaster Preparedness

Users must leave the library when instructed to do so during emergency situations and drills. Want to know more? View the Are You Ready? resource guide. Thank you for helping us keep our community safe.
