Why UX Pedagogy?

We teach user experience at the college level and are developing evidence-based teaching practices for UX. We’re researching existing teaching practices, gathering teaching materials, and creating community. Want to join us?

What is User Experience?

Based on Buley (2013), we define UX as:

      • a professional practice: a set of methods and techniques for researching what users want and need, and to design products and services for them
      • an outcome: the overall effect created by the interactions and perceptions that someone has when using a product or service
      • interdisciplinary: includes visual design, content strategy, writing, business analysis, product management, project management, analytics, and engineering.

Why social justice?

While UX can be a force for good, UX has a problem it’s not neutral. Design has a history of oppression that continues today. Who gets centered in design and who gets to design has material impacts on people’s everyday lives. Part of our work in this project is to interrogate existing UX practices through a social justice and anti-racist lens to reject the status quo and work towards more equitable and accountable design education and practice.
