Michelle Chicas passes her General Exam! 💫💫

Celebration with sushirritos, cake, and decorations!

It was a lot of work and she, in the words of one of her committee members, “knocked it out of the park!”.

Hayden and Claudia attend TEMTIA 11

Hayden and Claudia ventured to the other side of Lake Union to hear about current topics in EMT and MET in cancer and development. It was a treat to have all these experts in our “backyard”and to have the opportunity to meet with them and hear them share their work!

A story of Agar troubles

A needed and loved reagent in the Vasquez Lab are the apple juice agar plates that we use to collect Drosophila embryos. Vesta prepares them in mass. The troubles began in September when one after another autoclave failed to dissolve the agar properly. After consulting with experts, determining the autoclaves are cursed, saying some blessings, considering different sacrifices, avoiding the autoclaves entirely, Vesta succeeded in making plates again. YAY FOR ALL OF US, and thank you Vesta!!!

Quick hits of summer ☀️

An exciting visit!

We had our youngest, to date, scientist visitor come check out our set up. She figured out how to differentiate male and female flies from each other!

The next generation of scientists is very exciting!

Capstone achievements of the summer

Michelle attended an incredibly intense workshop on AI and machine learning at the Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, MA). She’s applying what she’s learned to train a model to help her segment and track cells.

Makenna presented their work this summer at the ISCRM undergraduate symposium. They gave an excellent poster!

Melissa presented her work at the BRIGHT UP symposium in a well-delivered lightning talk. The lab got to meet Dubs! Good luck Melissa during your senior year!

Out with Virgo season, it’s Libra season!

We celebrated some birthdays! (And now we’re wondering when Marcel’s birthday is 🧐)

in other news…

We also determined that the lab has the ideal balance of chaos and order muppets (50/50).

summer fun 🌊🚣🧋

Claudia named a Cancer Consortium New Investigator 2024 🎉

The Vásquez lab received a New Investigator Award from the Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Cancer Consortium to use the developing renal system of the fruit fly as a model to identify the fundamental cellular processes driving loose collective cell migration and MET – which are both essential developmental programs and steps in metastasis.

Seizing the summer days with the Kwon Lab

Together with our friends in the Kwon Lab , we took to Golden Gardens to grill and have a beautiful afternoon.

Kwon Lab and Vásquez Lab at Golden Gardens

We also went kayaking near UW!  Everyone survived, some of us even had fun!

Marcel hit the water too!

Highschool interns – Melissa and Rishik

Melissa and Rishik are back for another summer in the Vásquez Lab. Rishik is working with Isabel and Melissa is working with Vesta.

They both still like boba.

Makenna and Megan beautifully and effectively presented their projects at the undergraduate research symposium!

The lab welcomes Isabel and Hayden!

We are so excited that Isabel Mejia Natividad and Hayden Gizinski are joining the Vásquez lab!!!

Marcel makes it offi-shell!

What’s on deck? ☀️

Summer! We’re excited to have Rishik and Melissa joining us again this summer and to incorporate our new graduate students!

the lab attends NWSDB and welcomes spring

The lab attends NWSDB

The whole lab attended the Northwest Regional Society for Developmental Biology meeting at Friday Harbor Labs. Some highlights include:

  • learning about the developmental biology research in the PNW!
  • ferry rides (unfortunately no marine mammals were spotted)
  • tide pooling at Lime Kiln
  • Michelle presenting a poster
  • … and winning an award for it! 🎉

is it spring?? 🌸

It’s been a beautiful week so we took some time to admire the cherry blossoms & have a picnic with the Bryant lab. Marcel reminds us that we still live in Seattle, and we should be prepared for rain. We’re also excited to have Hayden Gizinski, a first year MCB student, on board for her spring rotation!

the lab turns one, and more! 🥳

The lab(s) turned one year-old in January!

We had a celebration with the Bryant Lab, Gilliespie Lab, and Kong Lab to celebrate! We are grateful to have such a great community of labs surrounding us (especially Claudia).

Two new members – Lily & Makenna

Lily is a Biochemistry graduate student who is rotating with us this winter quarter. She is working with Michelle to identify some very basic but important facts about cell shape change during tubule morphogenesis.

Makenna is a second year undergraduate Biochemistry student. She is working with Megan and Vesta on what is now known as “team tube”!

We’re lucky to have them both!

Submissions!

Makenna, Megan, and Claudia all had some significant submissions at the end of January. To celebrate we got cakes from Paper Cake Shop.

Marcel gets philosophical

Marcel is interested in understanding different “schemas” to support researchers – he’s encouraging us all to be brave and open as we sail into the unknown.

Marcel reads Uri Alon

lab firsts: first trip & first recombinant!

Lab outing to the aquarium!

After some deliberation and possibly overly complicated decision-making. We went to the Seattle Aquarium, admired all the marine creatures…and then ate some poke bowls 😛

(left to right) Michelle, Isabel, Megan, Vesta, & Claudia

The lab’s first recombinant strain!

Michelle decided that she didn’t want to wait for the outcome of a cross every time she did an experiment, so she set about planning and executing a strategy to make a recombinant strain that would save her from making that cross. It turns out elements she was trying to get together were quite close together so she had to screen quite a few lines before finding her hit, but she did it!

Summer – in like a lion, out like a lamb

Newcomers

This summer two intrepid high school researchers joined the Vásquez Lab, Rishik Chakrabarti and Melissa Calderón Bracho. We were fortunate to have them bring their curiosity and perspectives to lab.

Cause for celebration

Michelle not only applied but also received the Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant. This training grant will support her research for the next 1-2 years. Michelle developed a creative research proposal to identify how cell shape informs final organ form. Her hard work on her proposal and presentation were rewarded. We celebrated with boba!
