It’s been a long and busy school year in the Velian group! A few updates since our last posting:
- In December, second-year graduate student Christine Chang (BS, Caltech 2013) joined the group. Welcome, Christine!
- In February, along with the other inorganic chemistry groups at UW, we welcomed prospective graduate students with events including a BBQ hosted at Alexandra’s rooftop lounge. Christine made some awesome chemistry-themed cookies for the occasion. The group also joined prospective students on hikes to Wallace Falls and Little Si to experience the lush, scenic beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
- In March, Yuka organized a group event: lunch beneath the cherry blossoms in the Quad! We had a fantastic time sharing food, taking in the scenery, and enjoying an unexpected but welcome bout of March sunshine in Seattle.
- In April, postdoctoral researcher Dr. Andrei Chirila (Ph.D, UvA, NL 2017), joined the group. Welcome, Andrei!
- Later in April, we surprised Alexandra on her birthday with tiramisu cake and a small celebration. Alexandra was completely caught off guard– she had no idea we even knew it was her birthday! Guess our detective work paid off. (Fun fact: Alexandra shares a birthday with Karen Goldberg, our lab-space predecessor!)
