Immune Response to Shingles

**STUDY IS NO LONGER ENROLLING**

The purpose of this study is to learn more about the immune response to shingles. Shingles is caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV) which also causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body in a dormant (inactive) state. For reasons that are not fully understood, the virus can reactivate years later, causing shingles.

We will enroll people who recently had a shingles rash. The study will involve 4 clinic visits. Visits will involve large blood draws and biopsies of the shingles rash area and an area of healthy skin.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • 21 years of age and older
  • Have had a shingles rash in the last 45 days

Conditions which would prevent a volunteer from participating in this study:

  • HIV positive, Hepatitis C positive or an active infection with Hepatitis B
  • Impairment of the immune system

Compensation:

Up to $950 for study participation
