Transverse section through the layer of cone synapses (pedicles) in the marmoset foveal retina imaged by blockface scanning electron microscopy (SBEM). At the top are the long axons of the cone photoreceptors, in the center are the cone pedicles and at the bottom is the circuitry of the outer plexiform layer where many diverse retinal interneurons receive synaptic input from the cones, this is the first synaptic step in the visual process. Note, the marmoset is a new world monkey with vision similar to that of the human.
