Basic Anesthetic Plan

  • Anesthetic type: General/Regional/MAC
  • Pre-medications: (e.g. treatment for GERD, albuterol for asthma, multimodal pain medications, pre-treatment for post-operative nausea and vomiting, anxiolytics)
  • Access: (e.g. peripheral IVs, central line, introducer)
  • Monitors: (e.g. basic ASA monitors +/- foley, nerve stimulator, arterial line, BIS, PA catheter, etc.)
  • Fluids: (how much and what kind based on expected losses, NPO time, etc.)
  • Induction: (think about what medications are appropriate for induction based on the airway plan, case, patient’s co-morbidities)
  • Airway: (e.g. LMA, open airway, ETT? Video laryngoscope? Fiberoptic?)
  • Maintenance of Anesthesia: (e.g. volatile, TIVA, opioids, paralytics, regional anesthesia)
  • Emergence: (e.g. deep or awake)
  • Complications: (consider plans for management of complications specific to the case and/or patient’s co-morbidities)
