Eligibility
- The applicant must be a PhD student accepted into the laboratory of a BCTP faculty mentor. Applications with an interdisciplinary research plan (and a primary and collaborating mentor) are strongly suggested.
- The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or non-citizen national of the United States, or must have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (i.e., in possession of a currently valid Alien Registration Receipt Card I-551, or some other legal verification of such status). Non-citizen nationals are generally persons born in outlying possessions of the United States (e.g., American Samoa and Swains Island). Individuals on temporary student visas are not eligible for these slots.
Selection Criteria
- Overall quality of the applicant.
- Promise of the proposed research (intellectual merit and creativity).
- Importance of the proposed research to the applicant’s long-term goals.
- Training environment.
How to Apply
Application Materials. The applicant must submit all of the materials listed below in pdf format to this online form. A single pdf document is preferred. Items 4 and 5 must be obtained from the primary mentor.*
Applications (including letters of recommendation) due by 11:59pm PT, Monday, May 6, 2024, and must include:
- Completed Bioengineering Cardiovascular Training Program Application
- Research Plan and Career Goals document (2-page maximum excluding references) that includes:
- Importance of research questions being addressed.
- A general description of the research.
- Interdisciplinary approach/skills and proposed collaborators.
- Statement of career goals.
- Record of graduate course work and grade point average (unofficial transcripts are sufficient). We do not need undergraduate transcripts.
- Mentor’s Training Plan document (1 page) that includes:
- An evaluation of the applicant’s strengths, areas that will be strengthened in the training period, and an assessment of their potential for a career in research.
- Mentoring/training relationship with any collaborator(s) on the applicant’s research project.
- Expected trainee milestones, including publications and grant applications and a plan for training in scientific writing, seminar presentation, the basics of career advancement in academia and industry, and the fundamentals of laboratory management.
- A commitment of resources to help facilitate success of the project.
- A funding plan for the trainee at the end of their support in our program.
- Verification of commitment to the didactic component of the graduate program and additional requirements of our training program.
- A completed BCTP_Mentor Training_Record (include for primary and secondary mentors as applicable).
- Letters of Recommendation (see below) should be submitted separately by the referee.
Formatting guidelines:
- Font: 11 points or larger, standard sans serif fonts such as: Arial, Calibri, Georgia, Helvetica, etc. are preferred
- at least one-half inch margins (½” ) – top, bottom, left, and right
- Single spaced
*Mentors should be aware that BCTP funding does NOT fully cover trainee costs. It is the responsibility of the trainee’s mentor to cover costs that exceed the NIH award. Also, mentors may have only one BCTP supported trainee at a time.
Letters of Recommendation (due May 6, 2024)
Letters of recommendation from two individuals (excluding the primary mentor) must be submitted directly by the referee (person writing the recommendation) using this online form. Letters should provide evidence of the quality of the candidate, the trainee’s potential for creative, innovative research, and the trainee’s potential to become an independent scientist and leader in the field of biomedicine and health.
