Quantum Dot or Not

Professor Martijn Zwijnenburg- Professor of Computational Materials Chemistry, University College London
Host- Brandi Cossairt

In my talk I’ll discuss recent theoretical work of my group aimed at understanding the electronic and optical properties of inorganic nanoparticles and how these properties change with particle size and the capping groups terminating the particles’ surfaces. I’ll use nanoparticles of silicon, magnesium oxide, cadmium oxide and cadmium sulfide as examples to examine how the properties of different types of particles vary with particle size and how close the behaviour of these particles is to that typically sketched in textbooks. I’ll also consider what experimental trends of the absorption onset or photoluminescence energy with particle size can tell us about the character of the underlying transition and discuss how ligands capping the particles’ surfaces often might not exactly be innocent when it comes to the particles’ optical properties.
