WINTER 2022-GCIL Study Abroad

Dear CE grad and undergrad students,

This email is about the Grand Challenges Impact Lab (GCIL), a 10-week UW study abroad program in Bangalore, India, offered in the Winter Quarter through CE. For CE seniors, GCIL fulfills multiple graduation requirements, including the capstone requirement.

There is of course tremendous uncertainty surrounding Covid, in the US and abroad. The recent Covid spike in India peaked in early May and since then has come down dramatically, nationwide and in Bangalore. We do not know what the future holds, but UW is allowing Study Abroad classes to move forward at this time; we are doing so, while also monitoring the situation closely. (GCIL is well connected and in regular contact with partners on the ground in India, including multiple groups working in public health; the GCIL Assistant Director, Dr. Deborah Havens (who is with the GCIL program for the entire 10 weeks in Bangalore), is a medical doctor and a public health researcher.)

If you may be interested in this program, please see the information below, including info sessions, an email list, social media, and more. The application deadline is September 1. If you apply, you can decide later whether you wish to attend.

Deborah and I are happy to answer any questions you or your family may have!

Grand Challenges are the big problems facing humanity – things like food security, clean water, climate change, low-income housing, education in disadvantaged communities, and access to health care. GCIL empowers students to address Grand Challenges. Through GCIL, interdisciplinary teams of students are placed with an experienced local organization in Bangalore and are challenged to propose, test, and prototype solutions using tools of entrepreneurship and social innovation.
