Env./Water Seminar: 01/16: Shahzaib Khan: Irrigation through satellite remote sensing

Dear CEE Community,

This week’s environment and Water Program seminar will be given by Shahzaib Khan, a final-year PhD student in Hydrology. Shahzaib will present his irrigation advisory system for managing surface water resources efficiently while provide reliable crop water.

Time and location: Thursday (1/16): 3:30, More 230.

Title: How We Can Optimize Surface Water Irrigation Systems Through Satellite Remote Sensing

Abstract:

In this study, we present a comprehensive framework specifically designed for water providers. The proposed irrigation advisory system aims to manage surface water resources efficiently, by identifying the water-deficit and water-surplus regions, to support robust irrigation practices amid changing climatic conditions. The framework employs satellite remote sensing-based Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) and Penman-Monteith evapotranspiration models to estimate the net water requirements of crops accurately. By integrating data from previous irrigation cycles, current and forecasted precipitation, and evapotranspiration-based water needs, the framework calculates the net water demand for various command areas within irrigation canal networks. The advisories generated on a weekly basis offer water providers data-driven insights, enabling them to make informed decisions about water allocation. These advisories quantify the specific water demands, thereby allowing for strategic Continue reading

Internship and Job Opportunities

Hello,

I’m a former 2020 grad of the civil engineering program at UW. I’d like to pass along internship and new graduate job opportunities my company is offering in their Federal Way, and Vancouver Washington locations. You can find the link to our career page below.  All are welcome to apply regardless of concentration and I’d encourage anyone to apply for the internship regardless of class standing.

Mackay Sposito is primarily involved in land development, public works, and energy projects. Examples of our work are the Tehaleh master planned community in Bonney Lake, and the Main Street Promise in Vancouver. You can expect to be trained on the use of Civil3D for designing and drafting plans, stormwater modeling, report writing, and collaborating with other engineering firms.

Apply to be an Emerging Leader in Engineering (ELE) with the college of engineering

Hi folks,

Please consider applying to be one of the College of Engineering’s Emerging Leaders in Engineering (ELE) for next academic year (AY 2025-26). We consider these to be VERY important positions of influence in getting new students aware of and interested in civil and environmental engineering. I would LOVE to see at least 20 departmental students apply for these spots. So long as your graduation date is Spring 2026 or later, you are eligible to apply. That means even if you are a sophomore or freshman right now, you can apply!  This is a great way to give back to the community and do one of those memorable college things that are not required, but definitely rewarding.

Apply here: https://www.engr.washington.edu/student/leadership-programs

Applications are due January 20th, 2025

Further information

You can apply to any of these three types of ELEs:

In all cases, no previous experience is required. And, they pay you for doing these things!

Please consider doing this. We need YOU.

Invitation to presentation and discussion on Accelerating Energy and Climate Progress

Dear students,

Please find below an invitation to a presentation by the co-founder (and myself) of a new organization called OpenMinds, focused on the dual challenge of increasing energy demand and the need to urgently decarbonize.  This is a group of leaders from across sectors, but particularly in the energy sector and I’ve been enormously impressed and encouraged by their engagement in the issues and their agency to effect change.

Date: Jan 30
Time: 3:40 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Location: Founders Hall 170

Maya Tolstoy (Dean of the College of the Environment) & Frank Hodge (Dean of the Foster School of Business) invite you to an exclusive presentation with David Baldwin, founder of OpenMinds and Dean Tolstoy to discuss, “Accelerating Climate and Energy Progress”, and to explain what OpenMinds is doing to address the dual challenge of meeting increasing energy demand, while also addressing the urgent need to decarbonize.  This is an incredible opportunity to engage directly with a leading voice in energy transition and climate action. A question and answer session will follow.

Please RSVP here.
