COMPASSION IN SCIENCE

BROOKES ESTES

Brooks (she/her) earned her bachelor’s in Urban Wildlife Ecology from Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Western Washington University, and her master’s in Social Science from the interdisciplinary Environment & Community Program at Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt). Her thesis involved surveying California winegrowers to better understand how their environmental values related to their farming practices, particularly the use of barn owl boxes for rodent pest management. She is currently an Animal Technician Specialist (floater) for the Department of Comparative Medicine at UW.

As a current animal technician, she hopes to bring a useful perspective to the committee and give a voice to the unique challenges faced by those tasked with monitoring the health and well-being of a variety of research animals on a daily basis.

She is passionate about animal welfare, human-wildlife conflict management, and advocating for invisible disabilities and mental health. In her free time, she enjoys baking, sewing, playing with her dogs, rats, and mice, and spoiling her niece and nephew.
