Elevating Research: The Four Pillars of a Culture of Care

In its ongoing efforts to promote excellence in animal research programs, AAALAC International recently sought comments on its proposed policy to strengthen the Culture of Care. This policy emphasizes the integration of four equally important pillars: science, human welfare, animal welfare, and communication. Feedback from the research community underscored the importance of ensuring these pillars are balanced and interconnected to achieve a truly robust Culture of Care.

For those of us engaged in the Dare to Care (D2C) program, these principles resonate deeply. D2C serves as a vital component of a strong Culture of Care by encouraging all team members to prioritize compassion, communication, and ethical responsibility. The program goes beyond compliance by fostering a collaborative environment where scientific integrity and welfare are inseparable.

AAALAC’s draft policy aligns perfectly with D2C’s mission, emphasizing that the Culture of Care is not just an operational goal but a strategic framework. By recognizing that science flourishes when human and animal welfare are prioritized, and that effective communication is the glue holding these elements together, we can ensure that research programs achieve excellence.

As we continue to build on the principles of D2C, let’s remain engaged in the conversation around AAALAC’s policy development. By actively shaping this framework, we can ensure that our shared commitment to care sets the standard for ethical and impactful research programs.

Stay tuned for updates as this important initiative evolves!
