Webinar: Refined Methods of Handling Mice: Why & How to Make the Switch
Learn about Tunnel Handling, an alternative technique to picking mice up by the tail. Research has shown that tunnel handling is less distressful and reduces anxiety.
Dare 2 Care is honored to host The North American 3Rs Collaborative, as our invited guest speakers. Data indicates that traditional methods of picking mice up by the tail are aversive, inducing stress and anxiety which compromises animal welfare, introduces variability, and can impair study reliability and replicability. Such negative effects can be avoided or substantially reduced by instead using tunnel handling tunnels or cupped hands (i.e., non-aversive handling). During this talk, participants will learn why and how to switch to non aversive handling practices. The following slides are the recorded video from this event and divided into five sections; each speaker followed by a Question and Answer session. The last slide has a list of links mentioned by the speakers. The event occurred on November 18th, 2021.
