Black & Brown Excellence Group (BABE)
Mentorship has always been a strength of the department. The BABE group is not an exception. It strives to create mentorship and guidance among black and brown residents and fellows in the department. During its regular check-in meetings, faculty and residents interact in a small group to offer support and discuss projects. The department provides scholarships to residents and faculty in the group to attend the yearly conferences including the Society of Black Academic Surgeons conference, Association of American Indian Physician Conference, etc. The department also funds representation at student conferences such as Student National Medical Association and Latina Medical Student Association. Members of the group will continue to represent the department at these meetings to aid in the diversity recruitment of residents across the department’s training programs.
