About the group

We create a welcoming environment in which we aim to help others develop as scientists and leaders through supportive and constructive discussion and guidance. We are collaborative, non competitive, and share a common goal of elevating all members of the team. We strive to offer a safe place for all to voice concerns, discuss and address critical social issues faced in the scientific community. Quality snacks play an out-sized role in our meetings.

What topic areas are common?

We focus on the intersection of ecological principles with conservation and management.  Working across a range of ecosystems, we develop and apply diverse approaches and tools. Many (though not all) members are oriented towards quantitative analyses.

What do we do?

Our activities vary quarterly, and are decided by the group at the start of each quarter. Example activities include:

Group projects that lead to publications (e.g. Moriarty et al. 2017; Essington et al 2014; Essington et al. 2006)

Presentation practice and feedback

Research sounding board, brainstorming, and critical feedback

Professional development (e.g., practice job talks, discussion about leadership and mentoring)

Revisiting and critiquing themes in ecology

Critical exploration of contemporary issues in the academe

All members agree to the ELAF Code of Conduct

Meeting times: weekly 1 hour TBD each quarter
