Virology and Immunology Core

The V&IC provides cutting-edge virologic and immunologic assays, expertise and resources to support NHP research in a wide range of infectious disease including AIDS, Influenza, malaria, ZIKV, SARS-CoV-2 and others. V&IC services support processing of mucosal and other tissue specimens, analysis of immunopathology in tissues, analysis of viral loads (RT-PCR), immunologic monitoring of lymphocyte subset, CD4 counts, analysis of T cell responses by intracellular cytokine staining and multiparameter immunophenotyping to investigate changes in the innate and adaptive cellular landscape in NHP tissues during infection.

Tissue Processing

A novel resource that provides a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art optimized and validated assays and services to analyze mucosal responses in NHP.

Available Services:

  • PBMC Isolation
  • Lymphocyte Isolation: Lymph node
  • Lymphocyte Isolation: GI biopsy
  • Lymphocyte Isolation: GI tissue

Flow Cytometry

Analytical applications supported by the lab include:

  • Multicolor analysis
  • Cellular kinetics and physiological cellular responses
  • Cell cycle analyses (DNA, RNA content)

Tissue Repository

Protocols involving isolation and analysis of mucosal lymphocytes from nonhuman primate (NHP) are complex, demanding and costly. This significant disincentives investigators in their efforts to study the effects of vaccines or therapies on mucosal responses or to employ NHP models in their research. To address this need, we have establish the first nonhuman primate specimen repository consisting of lymphocytes expertly isolated from various mucosal and systemic compartments in uninfected and infected NHPs at various stages of disease.
