Activity: Find a UW Research Center or Institute

Overview

The University of Washington has a rich history of rigorous, strategic, and multidisciplinary research. UW has many department- and school-specific research labs, as well as many multidisciplinary centers and institutes. As a graduate student, finding labs and centers focused on your area of interest can lead to an increased understanding of the field and opportunities for attending conferences or events and even working with the lab. Take the time to explore these opportunities, and find a lab or center that interests you!

Activity: Find a UW Research Center or Institute

  • Visit the Research Centers and Institutes Page
  • Use the Research Centers Search Tool to explore based on keywords and the college/school it is associated with
  • Narrow your list to a few centers to explore further. Dive into questions such as:
    • What is their mission statement? How does this fit into your research interests?
    • What services do they provide for students?
    • Who are the professors and researchers associated with this center/lab?
  • Decide if and how you would like to get involved. Make a plan to attend an event, send an email, or sign up for their mailing list.

Reflection

  • Which research center are you most interested in learning more about?
  • Which faculty in your program are you most interested in working with? Which centers are they involved with?
  • Why do faculty form research institutes and centers?
