Shyanne King wins Best Science/Innovation Pitch at Fast Pitch Competition

On October 3rd, 2024, Shyanne King of the Alvarez lab participated in the Fred Hutch Cancer Center’s Translational Data Science Integrated Research Center Fast Pitch competition where she won the prize for Best Science/Innovation pitch. Congratulations, Shyanne, on this tremendous achievement! 

Jocelyn Cervantes and Nikhita Poole Awarded NCOR-KUH TL1 Grant

M3D students Jocelyn Cervantes of the Kanter lab and Nikhita Poole of the Gustafson and Newell labs both received the NCOR-KUH TL1 grant. They are two of the three pre-doctoral trainees who received this award, along with 6 postdoctoral trainees. 

Jocelyn’s research project is entitled Does CD36 mediate diabetes-induced monocyte lipid loading, and does it contribute to diabetic kidney disease? and Nikhita’s research project is entitled The roles of granulocytes in HLH and HLH-like toxicities following immunotherapy

Jessica Ayers Second Author of a Review Published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology

Jessica Ayers, an M3D PhD Candidate in the Simpson lab, has been published as the second author of a review in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Entitled Pumping the Breaks on Acantholytic Skin Disorders: Targeting Calcium Pumps, Desmosomes, and Downstream Signaling in Darier, Hailey–Hailey, and Grover Disease, it presents the current understanding and lack of targeted treatment options of the aforementioned skin disorders associated with the disruption of cell-cell adhesions. M3D Students at the 2024 School of Medicine PhD Hooding Ceremony

M3D Graduates Julie Boiko and Rene Coig walked at the 2024 School of Medicine Hooding Ceremony and were hooded by M3D Director Bill Mahoney. Congratulations! Other M3D students who graduated but were unable to participate are Shiyi Wang and Saumya Jani; we wish all of the M3D Graduates happiness & success in their future endeavors!

Jessica Ayers and Aquene Reid won Best Poster at the 2023 Cascadia Regenerative Medicine Symposium 

Jessica Ayers (Simpson lab) and Aquene Reid (Young & Jayadev lab) were awarded Best Poster at the 2023 Cascadia Regenerative Medicine Symposium!

Jess’s poster focused on generating an organotypic epidermal cell culture model for Hailey-Hailey Disease and utilizing that cell culture model to study the pathophysiology and uncover potential therapeutic targets for the disease. 

Aquene’s poster focused on using human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived microglia and neuron cocultures to study how microglia-neuron interactions change in the context of Alzheimer’s disease.

Karthikeya Gottimukkala awarded at ASGCT 2023 Annual Meeting

M3D Students Karthikeya Gottimukkala, Rachel Cunningham, Jack Catelli, as well as their mentor Dr. Jennifer Adair and other members of the Adair Lab at the 26th ASGCT Annual Meeting in Los Angeles (May 2023).

Karthik received the 2023 ASGCT Meritorious Abstract Travel Award and presented an Oral Abstract etitled Development of Gold Nanoparticles for In Vivo CRISPR Delivery – Improving Nuclease Loading and Stability with Pre-formed RNP Complexes.

Congratulations to Karthik and the other members of the Adair lab’s accomplishments!

M3D Graduates at Biomedical Hooding Ceremony

Graduates from the UW Biomedical Science PhD programs who graduated or will graduate from Autumn 2022-Autumn 2023 participated in the 2023 Interdisciplinary Biomedical Hooding Ceremony on Wednesday, June 14th 2023. M3D students who participated include Madeleine Hart, Monet Jimenez, Nandita Kumar, Michael Kiflezghi, and Miranda Lahman. Joining the faculty and directors who spoke during the event, Dr. Bill Mahoney the M3D Program Director and Associate Dean of Graduate Students and Post-Docs, along with well wishes shared the history of PhD regalia.

Congratulations to all of the 2022-2023 M3D graduates, including those who were unable to participate in the hooding ceremony; Benjamin Curtis, Kurt Berckmueller, and Harman Mahli. We wish you all great success and happiness in your future endeavors. 

 

Rachel Cunningham Accepted into ITHS TL1 Program

Rachel Cunningham from the 2019 M3D PhD cohort has been accepted into the Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) TL1 Translational Research Training Program.

“The ITHS TL1 program is a one-year mentored research training program in translational science for predoctoral students. This program creates a cross-disciplinary community of emerging researchers and provides them with specific training, career development opportunities, and team science skills to help them function effectively within translational science teams.”
