Welcome Back & Retreats

M3D Welcome Back social is to be held in the weeks before Autumn quarter starts. Immediately after the new cohort orientation, the M3D community (faculty, directors, students & staff) comes together to start the year with food and drinks. M3D Spring Retreat is held in the end of June. The retreat features morning meditation, a student-only mental health reflection, and later facutly attended research talks from M3D students (presented by 3rd year students and above), catered lunch, happy hour, and paddle board/boat rentals (generally at the WAC). Rotation Talks

Quarterly research seminars presented by first-year M3D students, reflecting upon their laboratory rotations from each respective quarter. Normally scheduled on the Tuesday of each rotation quarter’s finals week. To be attended by M3D students, faculty, directors, and staff.

Professional Development Events

M3D Professional Development Group led by Rachel Cunningham, Cassie Winter, Alex Reers, and Aaron Ramonett, organize professional development programming for M3D students and other DLMP graduate students, postdocs, and researchers.

Beer & Science – Monthly journal clubs held at SLU, meeting are intended provide a comfortable setting for current graduate students and researchers of DLMP to practice public speaking and receive feedback from their peers on their research. The meetings will be the first week of the month and feature snacks & beverages (alcoholic & non-alcoholic) to enjoy while sharing your research. Lunch and Learns – A series of interactive seminars 1-2x per academic quarter where current senior M3D students and faculty volunteer to teach skills to more junior and first year students previously covered in the PATH 511 course. This seminar series will allow M3D students the opportunity to learn essential skills that will help them during their PhD study and beyond. Intended to be held on main campus in HSB or HSEB buildings. See emails from m3d@uw.edu and the M3D calendar for details.

M3D Alumni Talks – Series of talks by M3D alumni in a diversity of different career paths, most recently featuring M3D Alumna Louisa Helms, PhD in Spring 2023. The goal of the presentations will be on how the individual identified that career path of interest, the steps they took to reach their position, and skills they found important along the way. M3D Recruitment / Interview Weekend

Interview weekend is generally held in the first week of Feburary of the admitting year and is expected to be attended by the entire M3D community and invited applicants in various ways. Including a welcome dinner, interviews, research presentations, social events, etc.

Other recruitment events such as SACNAS, ABRCMS, or the GEG Symposium may require the assistance of 2nd+ year students. If you are interested in attending a conference with M3D to assist in recruitment, please volunteer at the beginning of the year when prompted via email.

Capstones

Four year+ students present a Capstone presentation that emphasizes the relevance of their research to human health and disease, as well as the translational significance and impact of theirresearch. All fourth year M3D students are required and to give a 15 minute “Capstone” presentation, followed by a 5-minute Q&A, focused on the medical significance of their research. Capstones are generally held in the beginning of May and are required to be attended by fourth year students, it is strongly preffered that their mentors & lab members attempt to attend as well as other M3D community members such as 3rd year students who should be looking forward to what is expecting of them the following year. All other faculty and students are enouraged to attend.
