Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At the University of Washington and in the M3D PhD Program, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are integral to excellence. We value and honor diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives, strive to create accessible, welcoming, and respectful learning environments, and promote access, opportunity, and justice for all.

Please use this page to review our commitment to diversity and to access on and off campus resources for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

A variety of resources and groups are available to support minority students participating in the M3D PhD Program and other programs at the University.

DLMP JEDI Committee

M3D Director Dr. Bill Mahoney and M3D Student Shyanne King represent the program on the DLMP JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) Committee.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) is committed to fostering a diverse community that is encouraging, inclusive, and welcoming to all. This is reflected in efforts to increase the recruitment, retention, and advancement of individuals from underrepresented groups and to promote an inclusive environment across the Department. DLMP recognizes the importance of role models among the faculty, students, and staff in recruitment to our community, advancement, and promotion.

DLMP also recognizes the systemic racism and oppression of marginalized groups present in our communities and we are committed to dedicate efforts to eliminate inequities in health, education, and research and to restore justice to our system. A diverse and equitable scientific and clinical workforce will enrich the intellectual environment and the quality of our programs by promoting scientific advances, improved healthcare outcomes, and exemplary training opportunities. To this end, increasing diversity, promoting inclusion and equity, and providing JEDI education and training are high priorities for the DLMP and M3D.

Humans of Science

UW DLMP Assistant Professor Dr. Mariya Sweetwyne and M3D PhD student Shyanne King are launched Humans of Science: A Trainee Support Group! These meetings are closed to regular faculty and provide a safe space for trainees to participate in honest conversations about career pathways, mentorship, advancement, resources, and our intersectional identities.

M3D Recruitment

The M3D PhD Program is committed to recruiting diverse participants, including students with a broad spectrum of scientific interests, from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, with physical or mental impairment that limits any major life activity, and from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.

Throughout the year, we attend many national conferences that are focused on professional and academic diversity such as the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), and the annual Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science National Conference (SACNAS). During these conferences, we host and staff an informational booth for those interested in pursuing an academic path in scientific research to solve problems relevant to human disease. We welcome a personal visit from you at any of these events where we can speak with you one-on-one regarding our program and the admissions process. Click on the above links to find the dates, times, and locations for the upcoming conferences.
