AIc vs. COVID-19

With the pandemic looming around us, there are some of us who have stumbled upon a valuable resource, time. The Analytics Innovations Club is using this time to double down on projects that will help local businesses and the community. Our partnership with the Korean Women’s Association (KWA) has grown in scope. Initially it involved creating dashboards for real-time reporting but has now expanded to digging into data architecture and warehousing processes. As KWA is an organization that provides in-home care to over 1500 clients, the virus has them in emergency response mode, limiting the amount of focus they can direct toward this project. Regardless, members of the AI club are committed to delivering a valuable tool that will improve their business processes.

Another project the AI club has been working on is to determine factors that affect attendance at the Washington State History Museum. After initial communications, the club is staged to receive data and begin analysis.

In addition to these projects, the club is working on partnering with the state emergency group to draw insights into consumer confidence in the economy amidst the pandemic. Data will be sourced from social media platforms and the economic impact will be compared to similar events, such as the swine flu. UW has also launched the Population Health Initiative to support research on Covid-19 and topics such as how to mitigate its impact. Covid-19 rapid response grants up to $20,000 are available for research ranging from mental health impacts, risk communication and approaches to rapidly scaling production of PPE (The full list can be found on their page).

Students of UWT interested in joining the club and contributing to this work are welcomed to email the president (cannonje@uw.edu) for more information. Continue visiting our page for monthly updates on club activities and stay safe!
