My name is Cynthia Riley DeHope and I work with prospective applicants to the MSBA and MBA programs. I hope to give you insight to the MSBA program and application process on this blog. The MSBA admissions page includes important information about application deadlines and upcoming digital information sessions. I encourage you to reach out with any questions or to schedule an appointment. The best way to reach me is by email at cynthia8@uw.edu. I look forward to connecting with you!

If you’ve been following the Milgard MSBA program, you know it stands out for many reasons. Students have the unique opportunity to complete a yearlong Applied Project with a local company, learn from world class faculty who care about their progress and become part of a stellar group of proud and successful MSBA alumni. So how do you gain admission in a competitive program like this one? You need to do all you can to stand out from your peers.

MIND THE DETAILS

Each piece of the application matters. Don’t overlook even the simple pieces; check your grammar and be sure that you are thorough in reviewing each document before you upload. How is the video angle? What is in the background? Be as professional as possible to avoid focus on the details that shouldn’t matter — like that unmade bed in the background. Does your video link work? Have a friend try it. The point is that all details matter. The committee spends a great deal of time reviewing applications, so do everything you can to ensure that you are representing yourself as professionally and accurately as possible.

EXPRESS YOURSELF

The majority of the application doesn’t give you room to show us who you are. We ask for things such as your Grade Point Average, positions you’ve held and people who can give you a positive recommendation. Your personal statement and video are your opportunities to express yourself beyond academics. Be authentic. How will the Milgard MSBA help you meet your career goals? What is driving you to pursue a graduate degree at this time?

DON’T LEAVE US HANGING

The prerequisite areas are very important in the assessment of your application. All too often, applicants will leave the explanation blank or write “none” or “N/A”. If you don’t have experience in that area, show some initiative by explaining what you’re doing to address it. Are you registered for Foundations for Data Analytics modules? Explain that. Do you have intermediate experience through a recent or current job? Give us a few sentences of description. The last thing you want to do is leave the committee guessing how proficient you might be.

We have been impressed with the caliber of applicants for the MSBA program. While this is a competitive application process, it is possible to stand out in all the best ways. Impress us with your intellect, drive and passion to succeed. We look forward to reviewing your application soon!
