Now enrolling for the Motor Recovery through Plasticity Inducing Cortical Stimulation clinical study

Is your hand or arm weak due to a stroke?

You may be able to join this clinical trial investigating a new treatment method. This new method involves the use of an implanted device that will deliver electrical stimulation to the brain to support rehabilitation and recovery.

The study lasts a little over a year and includes six weeks of physical rehabilitation in addition to study visits. All rehabilitation is done by licensed therapists during one-on-one study visits.

You will receive the device and all rehabilitation visits at no cost to you or your insurer, and we will reimburse parking expenses.

What is this study about?

Physical rehabilitation is the main method to help a person recover from stroke

Stroke is one of the top three causes of human disability and most patients have enduring difficulties with movement after stroke. Rehabilitation therapy remains the primary method of treatment, but some patients do not respond to this, and some only show partial recovery. This study aims to enhance rehabilitation and allow patients to have better outcomes from physical therapy through the use of brain stimulation.

You may be eligible for the study if:

  1. It has been at least six months since your ischemic stroke
  2. You are between 22 to 75 years old
  3. You have difficulty moving your arm or hand
  4. You are willing to undergo brain surgery to receive an implanted investigational device
  5. You are able to undergo MRI imaging studies of your brain

About us:

This study is led by Dr. Jeffrey Ojemann, Vice-Chair for Discovery and Professor in the University of Washington’s Department of Neurological Surgery, and Dr. Steven Cramer, Professor in the University of California Los Angeles’ Department of Neurology. Both are long-time clinicians and researchers in the field of neurological diseases and stroke. Together with a team of doctors, study coordinators, engineers, and neuroscientists, we will accompany you throughout your participation to ensure safe and respectful study procedures.
