Check out the new URiM (underrepresented in medicine) Shadow Program Pilot page. UW Primary Care will be developing a seasonal program based on the outcomes of this pilot. Our goal is to support diversity in healthcare workers by offering students opportunities to view daily processes in a Primary Care clinic, build connections with potential mentors, and learn more about careers in health care.
UW Medicine Primary Care Teaching Programs
UW Medicine Primary Care is proud to provide learning opportunities for students with interest in a variety of roles in the healthcare field. In addition to the residency programs co-located with UW Medicine Primary Care Clinics, we provide learning opportunities for students from many settings:
- Medical Assistant Externs through agreements with local schools
- Students from the UW School of Medicine, MEDEX , UW School of Nursing, UW School of Social Work, and UW School of Public Health
- ARNP, DNP and PA students through agreements with multiple schools
- High school graduates and undergraduate students seeking shadowing/observer opportunities
- (working to add opportunities for school-aged students)
At the forefront of this work, our Primary Care team is building a more equitable ecosystem for students interested in a career in medicine. Our goal is to facilitate learning opportunities for all students by reducing barriers and creating the type of connections with healthcare professionals that have been historically out of reach for some.
New shadow program to support diversity in healthcare
Welcome to the NEW UW Medicine Primary Care & Population Health Student Opportunity Site!
As a member of the University of Washington Medicine system, UW Medicine Primary Care embraces the outlined Institute for Healthcare Improvement framework. Our Primary Care team is building a more equitable ecosystem for students interested in a career in medicine. We envision a student shadowing experience in which we provide a patient-centered opportunity for students. Our goal is to facilitate shadowing opportunities for underrepresented students by reducing barriers and creating the type of connections with healthcare professionals that have been historically out of reach.
UW Medicine has adopted the Institute for Healthcare Improvement framework:
- Make health equity a strategic priority
- Develop structure and processes to support health equity work
- Develop specific strategies to address multiple determinants of health on which we can have direct impact
- Decrease institutional racism within the organization
- Develop partnerships with community organizations
