Congratulations to all of this year’s graduates!

Students in the Division of Politics, Philosophy & Public Affairs (PPPA) featured prominently at this year’s graduation event, held June 13th on the Puyallup Fairgrounds. 

 

 

 

 

Politics Philosophy & Economics student Kristina Pogosian was elected by her peers to serve as this year’s commencement speaker.

The Chancellor’s Medal, given to one UWT student selected for their extraordinary achievement and inspirational leadership, went to Law & Policy senior Bengisu Cicek.  Andre Jimenez earned this year’s prestigious President’s Medal, which is given to the graduating senior with the most distinguished academic record. As ASUWT President, Andre also served as a speaker at the ceremony.

Also featured during the graduation festivities were Law & Policy major Selena Caldera, a veteran and political activist who now heads to Emery Law School; Law & Policy major Chanise Jackson, who during her UWT was awarded the Truman Scholar, a Bamford Fellowship, and was elected to the ASUWT; and Politics, Philosophy & Economics major  Kevin Yuan-Liu, who is heading off to the University of Oregon’s Law School.

 

This year we also celebrated the graduation of our first Economics & Policy Major. Michael Price will be starting his MPA degree at UW’s Evan School in the fall.

Congratulations to the entire class for your many and varied accomplishments.

First Economics and Policy Analysis Major Accepted into UW’s Evans School

Congratulations to Michael Price, UWT’s first student to graduate with a major in our new Economics and Policy Analysis degree.  Michael was recently accepted into the University of Washington’s Daniel J. Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, where this fall he will begin its Master of Public Administration (MPA) program.  The Evans School is ranked as one of the top graduate MPA programs in the nation.

Michael grew up spending time between New Jersey and South Florida, but has found his home in Washington state. In returning to college, he dreamed of gaining the skills to allow him to contribute to solving social problems. For this reason, he was drawn to UWT’s new Economics and Policy Analysis program, which just winter quarter began accepting students. (See this interview with Michael.)

“Because of my success in the EPA major, I wholeheartedly recommend this major for any students interested in either Economics or Policy, as they go hand in hand,” commented Michael after learning of his admission to the Evans School. “The faculty here at UWT has supported me along the way. I’m excited to begin  this new stage of my academic career.” So are we Michael. Best wishes!

Truman Scholarship for Graduate School

The Truman is a competitive national scholarship. Each year, the Foundation reviews over 600 applications for our 55 to 65 Scholarships awarded annually. These 600 applications do not include the students who compete on their own campus for one of a school’s four nominations.
The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection. If you are currently a senior, you must be attending a fifth year with your graduation date not earlier than December 2018. The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development. Scholars are invited to participate in a number of programs: Truman Scholar Leadership Week, The Summer Institute, and The Truman-Albright Fellows Program. Please visit the For Scholars section of the Truman website for an overview of the programs the Foundation currently offers for Scholars.

The Truman Scholarship recognizes outstanding leadership potential, academic achievement, and the desire to pursue a career in public service. Prospective Truman Scholars must demonstrate the following:

  • A strong commitment to a public service career
  • A record of public service activities and contributions with some form of government or political achievement
  • Strong leadership abilities and potential as demonstrated by holding offices, accepting and delegating responsibilities, and by accomplishments outside the classroom
  • The ability to define and realistically plan public service goals
  • Strong interview skills

Class of 2018 Heads to Law School!

Now that the dust has settled from commencement, grad parties, and those first gorgeous days of summer… isn’t it time to think about going back to school??
Meet three of PPPA’s Class of 2018 who are heading to law school this fall.

Gabi Gutierrez, ’18

Gabi Gutierrez, a Law & Policy major with a minor in Human Rights, will be attending the University of Washington Law School, with a major focus in Public Service Law. “Although I am extremely grateful for the time I had at the University of Washington Tacoma, I feel like I have even more vigor to practice law. If you are interested in following a career in the legal field, I would highly recommend taking the time to explore the law through internships or volunteering. I’m extremely grateful to have interned for the Department of Assigned Counsel and to have developed supportive relationships with faculty members, because without my experience I would have never discover my true desire to practice criminal law.” Continue reading →

Alumni Spotlight: Jackie Wheeler, ’13

Jackie Wheeler, ’13

Congratulations to UWT alum Jackie Wheeler on her acceptance to the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at George Washington University! 

Since graduating from the Politics, Philosophy & Economics program in 2013, Jackie has worked as a Program Specialist with the Office of the Secretary of State, Elections Division, in Olympia, WA. She also interned for the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. while still an undergraduate. Now returning to the D.C. for her Master’s, Jackie reflects on how UW Tacoma helped her along her path to a career she feels passionate about.

When she moved to Washington from North Carolina, Jackie originally intended to attend UW Seattle, but unexpectedly fell in love with UW Tacoma instead. “I love the small class sizes, the prestigious faculty, and the feeling of community that you get when being on campus,” she says. “I have many fond memories at UWT. I know that the friends I made while at UW Tacoma will be my friends for life.”  Continue reading →

Congratulations to Catherine Tonsberg on her recent acceptance to Brown University’s Master of Public Affairs program! Currently living and working in Rhode Island, Catherine answered a few questions for us about how her time at UW Tacoma prepared her for her career and, now, her graduate education.

Catherine majored in Politics, Philosophy, & Economics (PPE), with a Law and Policy minor. Describing her program, she says, “I was first drawn to UW Tacoma by the faculty who were active in their field and doing interesting and important work, but the PPE major is what cemented my decision to attend…. The PPE major provided me with analytical tools far beyond what any of these fields would have on their own, and has made me well prepared to think about the human and moral implications of political and economic issues.”  Continue reading →
