Calling all students interested in public policy and economic analysis

Thinking of graduate school?  Consider applying to the Public Policy and International Affairs’ (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute, which is a new summer program at the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy. The application closes on November 1, 2023.

The PPIA program promotes the participation of underrepresented groups in domestic and international public service. This program is fully-funded, with a curriculum that includes economics, policy analysis, implementation, quantitative methods, and community engagement – all designed to sharpen students’ quantitative, analytic, and leadership skills.  You’ll also gain exposure to public service in the Pacific Northwest through experiential learning opportunities, mentorship, field trips, and engagement with community-based practitioners, regional leaders, and elected officials. This institute offers a terrific learning opportunity as well as enhances your credentials for graduate school in a public policy field.

PPE Major Teresa Dennerlein Wins Two Scholarships

Sophomore and PP&E Major Teresa Dennlein has gotten this academic year off to a great start, having been selected for two competitive scholarships!

Teresa is one of nine students selected in this year’s cohort of Dressel Scholars. The University of Washington Tacoma Dressel Scholars Program recognizes and rewards exceptional scholarly achievement, community engagement, and leadership potential for any student enrolled at UW Tacoma. The Dressel Scholars Program was created to honor the legacy of Melanie Jan LaPlant Dressel by creating a robust scholarship and mentorship program that affords our students the opportunities to develop their leadership skills and community connections while giving them the financial freedom to fully participate in their UW Tacoma experience.

Teresa was also awarded a Jennifer Dunn-Thompson Scholarship through the Washington Policy Center. The scholarship is for female students who are interested in policy-related fields, and named in honor of the late Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn.

Truman Scholarship for Graduate School

The Truman is a competitive national scholarship. Each year, the Foundation reviews over 600 applications for our 55 to 65 Scholarships awarded annually. These 600 applications do not include the students who compete on their own campus for one of a school’s four nominations.
The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection. If you are currently a senior, you must be attending a fifth year with your graduation date not earlier than December 2018. The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development. Scholars are invited to participate in a number of programs: Truman Scholar Leadership Week, The Summer Institute, and The Truman-Albright Fellows Program. The Truman Scholarship recognizes outstanding leadership potential, academic achievement, and the desire to pursue a career in public service. Prospective Truman Scholars must demonstrate the following:

  • A strong commitment to a public service career
  • A record of public service activities and contributions with some form of government or political achievement
  • Strong leadership abilities and potential as demonstrated by holding offices, accepting and delegating responsibilities, and by accomplishments outside the classroom
  • The ability to define and realistically plan public service goals
  • Strong interview skills

The Hertog Foundation is pleased to announce its 2018 fellowships and seminars for undergraduates and recent grads.

As you can see on our website, the Foundation offers various fellowships on public policy and political thought in Washington, DC. Each carries funding for travel as well as housing accommodations. Fellows study with master teachers and hear from distinguished speakers drawn from academia, politics, journalism, and business. Truman Scholarship Supports Careers in Public Service

The Truman Scholarship is a prestigious national scholarship for students passionately committed to careers in public service, social justice, or education. It provides funding for graduate school, leadership training, and professional opportunities.

Interested in Career in the Foreign Service? Check out this Fellowship

Here is a great fellowship opportunity for students interested in a Foreign Service Career. 

The Rangel Graduate Fellowship:

The Rangel Graduate Fellowship is a program that aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the Foreign Service.  The Rangel Program selects 30 Fellows annually and helps support them through:

  • Two years of graduate study;
  • Internships and professional development activities; and
  • Entry into the Foreign Service.

The program provides up to $47,500 annually towards tuition, room, board, books and mandatory fees for completion of two-year master’s degrees. Members of groups historically underrepresented in the RangelForeign Service and those with financial need are especially encouraged to apply.  Fellows who successfully complete the program and Foreign Service entry requirements will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers (and have to serve for five years).

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be U.S. citizens;
  • Be seeking admission to enter graduate school in the fall of 2017 for a two-year program at a U.S. university in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

Deadline

Application deadline for 2017 is September 21, 2016.

Travel the World with Bonderman Travel Fellowship

Want to spend eight months traveling the world after graduating from UW Tacoma?

The Bonderman Travel Fellowship provides 14 UW students with $20,000 for eight months of solo travel to six or more countries in two or more major regions of the world. Fellows may not conduct research, pursue an academic project, or participate in a formal program or organization.

Applicants must:

  • be enrolled and in good standing at the UW in winter quarter and
  • hold US citizenship or permanent resident status.
  • All undergraduate students with senior credit standing and a degree application on file, AND who also meet ONE of the following criteria are eligible to apply:
    • at least a 3.65 cumulative UW GPA by the start of Winter 2017; OR
    • participation and good standing in UW Tacoma’s Global Honors Program, by the start of Winter 2017.

Deadline:  Application deadline is 12:00 pm (noon) January 9, 2017.
