The Pregnancy Content Module

This post shows one example of how one could organize information into a Luna content module.

This example is a 67 page Pregnancy module that Eliana Socha created in April 2024. The module covers pregnancy health symptoms and conditions, and is based on World Health Organization guidelines adapted for CNB Panama context 9789241549912-eng.pdf (who.int), with additional information from a variety of other sources, such as Urgent Maternal Warning Signs | AIM (saferbirth.org). We currently are having health experts review this material to ensure its accuracy and efficacy and perhaps reveal other ways changes that may motivate changes in how Luna works.

Figure 1 shows every page in the Pregnancy module, and the inter-page links manually inserted by Eliana. The figure is organized into six areas, as represented by the colored dash lines:

  • App Entry – pages used to access a module.
  • Content Module Entry – pages used to access the primary content.
  • Prenatal Symptoms and Postnatal Symptoms  – groups of pages describing a variety of symptoms.
  • Prenatal Conditions and Postnatal Conditions – groups of pages describing a variety of conditions.
Pregnancy module page flow

Figure 2 shows an abstract representation of how the pages in the symptoms areas are organized in the Pregnancy module.

Pregnancy module information architecture
Figure 2: The Pregnancy module’s information architecture. Other content modules may have different information architectures.

On the left are Picker pages, each which shows one or more symptoms. Clicking on a symptom takes the reader to an Overview page describing that symptom, and linking to one or more conditions that may cause that symptom. A condition is represented by a set of pages that we call a Condition details set which contains four pages: a Condition page that provide an overview of the condition; a Symptoms page that lists symptoms associated with this condition; a Treatment page that describe how to treat this condition; and a Science page that describe the science related to this condition. A single symptom overview page may have links to multiple conditions, and a single condition may be linked to from multiple symptom overview pages.

The blue-dashed rectangles in Figure 2 indicate sequences of pages that the Luna mobile app will allow a reader to navigate through via Right and Left buttons. Each section may have one or more pages. For example, once the reader used a Picker to open an Overview page, the reader may use the Right button to continue down the list of overview pages. When the reader gets to the last page in the section, the Right button will no longer be active, indicating that there are no more pages in the section. Similarly, the Left button will not be active when at the first page in a section.

This structure is visible in the high-fidelity prototype pages shown in Figure 1. In the Prenatal Symptoms area, the reader starts out at one of two pages (left column) that each lists six symptoms of prenatal health issues. Clicking on a symptom takes the reader to one of 12 symptom overview pages (middle column), each of which describes a particular symptom, such as “Severe Headache” (second from top) or “Can’t stay awake” (top). Each symptom overview page links to one or more sets of pages (right column) that cover four aspects (condition, symptoms, treatment, and science) of a specific condition that may exhibit that symptom. Figure 1 collocates those four parts of the condition details since they are tightly related to each other. The Condition areas are similar, except that clicking on a condition in a left-hand page takes the reader directly to a Condition details set.

The Conditions areas in Figure 1 are are similarly organized, except that the Picker page links directly to the Condition details set pages.

Here are definitions of the terms in Figure 2:

Term Description
Picker page Allows the reader to see a set of symptoms or conditions to navigate to. Each topic is represented by an image and a caption. Clicking in that area of the screen will take the reader to associated Overview page.
Overview page Provides a high-level overview of the symptom or condition.
Condition details set A set of four pages about one condition.
Condition page A page describing the condition.
Symptoms page A page describing key symptoms related to the condition.
Treatment page A page describing how to treat the condition.
Science page A page describing the science behind the condition.

This Pregnancy module organizes pages into symptoms and conditions. To help authors create other symptom-condition modules we created a PowerPoint template that an author could use, and documentation on using that template. That template covers all pages shown in Figure 1, except for the App Entry pages which are created and controlled by the Luna mobile app.

The Pregnancy module is just one way to organize content in a Luna content modules. A module author has considerable freedom in the type of content to include, how to organize that content into different types of pages, and what inter-page links to include, all based upon what the author feels is necessary for the module they are creating. We currently are working on examples of other types of content modules.
