Head and Neck Cancer and Swallowing Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Fellowship at Emory University Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery
The Emory University Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery of the Emory University School of Medicine is offering the opportunity for one highly qualified graduate of an accredited speechlanguage pathology program to complete a 12-month fellowship, beginning September 1, 2017, dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of patients with head and neck cancer and swallowing disorders.
The multidisciplinary Head and Neck Surgery team is staffed by highly skilled specialists in head and neck surgery, microvascular reconstruction, radiation oncology, hematology oncology, speech-language pathology, social work, advanced practitioners, nursing, and many more professionals. The CFY candidate will participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, radiation oncology chart rounds, inpatient and outpatient care of the head and neck patient, pre-operative counseling, grand rounds and resident rounds, as well as participate in research activities.
Experience and training offered in:
• Clinical swallow evaluations
• Flexible Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing at the bedside and in the outpatient clinic
• Modified barium swallow studies
• Tracheostomy management
• Post Laryngectomy Voice Restoration
• Pre operative counseling for Laryngectomy and Free Flap patients
• Prophylactic care for the organ preservation population
• Advanced dysphagia evaluation and therapy in collaboration with a dysphagia specialist
• Multidisciplinary care of the head and neck patient in the inpatient and outpatient settings
Requirements
The appropriate candidate must have acquired experience in the evaluation and treatment of head and neck cancer patients during their enrollment in a master’s level accredited speech-language pathology program. They must have graduated from this program prior to August of the year they are applying for. The candidate must have a strong academic background as well as reputable recommendations of their clinical skill, initiative, and potential for successfully completing this fellowship. Experience working with head and neck cancer patients and prior clinical exposure to tracheostomy, laryngectomy, and TEP is preferred. Experience in dysphagia evaluation and treatment including modified barium swallows and FEES is advantageous.
