International Student Services and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions have an outstanding opportunity for a part-time, temporary Graduate Staff Assistant to work for 3 quarters, from September 16, 2017 – June 15, 2018. This position offers a valuable, hands-on opportunity to learn about and assist international students through the academic cycle from initial inquiry to graduation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Within Admissions:
• Read and evaluate admission applications, considering both academic and personal factors
• Answer a variety of questions about international undergraduate admissions, requirements, orientation programs, registering for classes, housing, student support services, and student life at the UW through email correspondence and other outreach activities
• Assist with data entry and I-20 processing for newly admitted undergraduate international students

Within ISS:
• Serve as an international student adviser for undergraduate and graduate students
• Provide excellent student service for callers and drop-ins at the reception desk
• Advise students one-on-one and respond to email and phone requests
• Maintain both paper and electronic student immigration files
• Review benefit applications including program extension, change of status, and employment
• Refer students to appropriate campus resources
• Refer students with complex cases to staff advisers
• Deliver informational workshops to small groups
• Assist departments with basic regulatory information
• Perform project work as requested
• Participate in orientation sessions for new international students

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT:  September 16, 2017 – June 15, 2018

HOURS: 740 hours over 17 pay periods. This is 37 weeks from Sept. 16, 2017 – June 15, 2018 which is approximately 20 hours per week with one week off in December during the winter quarter break and one week off in March for the
spring quarter break.

SALARY: Tuition plus standard salary. Salary is commensurate with student standing.

CREDIT LOAD: Must be formally enrolled as a UW graduate student for at least 10 credits each quarter for fall, winter, and spring quarters.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Currently enrolled UW graduate student
• Strong interest in international education as a career
• Desire to learn, apply, and communicate complex immigration regulations and university policy
• Ability to relate and communicate positively with students from culturally diverse backgrounds and whose first language may not be English
• Excellent written and verbal skills, especially writing professional emails that represent the UW
• Reliable, self-starter with careful attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, high traffic environment
• Learn quickly and apply complicated assessment guidelines in the review of applications without personal bias

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
