PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The job of Speech Language Pathologist is done for the purpose of identifying students with communication disabilities; assessing and diagnosing communication disorders; planning and implementing appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impact on student success; recommending treatment plans; and providing guidance and oversight to Communication Assistants.
There are multiple positions available, full and part-time, ranging from 2.5 – 5.0 days per week for the 2019/2020 school year.

FUNCTIONS:
– Assesses students’ communication skills (e.g. articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, etc.) for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility, and developing recommendations for treatment.
– Provides direct and indirect consultative therapy services to eligible children (e.g. treatment plans, interventions, educational materials, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of communication disorders in compliance with established guidelines.
– Administers standardized and/or supplemental assessments for the purpose of identifying students with communication disorders.
– Screens and evaluates referred children (e.g. administering tests, observations, reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing for educational program recommendations.
– Analyzes assessment data for the purpose of determining eligibility and designing intervention strategies to minimize adverse impact on student success.
– Participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and individualized education program committee for the purpose of presenting evaluation results, developing treatment plans, and/or providing training to parents, students, and staff.
– Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. parents, teachers, administration, team members, other professionals, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues, and providing services in conformance with established guidelines.
– Consults with teacher, parents, other personnel, and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans for services, making recommendations, and/or facilitating improved performance in the classroom or at home.
– Maintains manual and electronic files and/or records (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documents, quarterly reports, screening results, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information as required for reference and/or compliance.
– Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars (e.g. training, IEPs, team meeting, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.
– Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. assessment data, correspondence, memos, treatment plans, Medicaid billings, reports, required documentation, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
– Presents at in-services and workshops for the purpose of providing information and/or training to staff, parents, and other professionals.
– Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, communication disorders, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students’ needs.
– Responds to inquiries from parents, teachers, staff, students, etc. for the purpose of providing information, recommendations, and/or referrals as appropriate.
– Transports supplies and equipment to a variety of sites for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.
– Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
SKILLS
are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments, operating specialized equipment used in the treatment of communication disorders, operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications, and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios, review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, speak persuasively to implement desired actions, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: anatomy and physiology of speech mechanisms and disorders, principles and practices of speech and language therapy, and pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and/or laws.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events, gather, collate, and/or classify data, and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, analyze data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups and work with a variety of data. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to the ethical standards and codes of the profession and to the established rules, regulations, and laws governing communication disorders programs, adapting to changing work priorities, communicating with diverse groups, utilizing specialized equipment in communication disorders, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines and schedules, working as part of a team, working with detailed information/data, maintaining effective working relationships, translating therapy data into meaningful educational activities, and willingness to travel to remote work locations.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.
Experience
Job related experience within specialized field is required.
Education
Bachelor’s/master’s degree in job related area.
Certificates & Licenses
Valid Washington State ESA credential w/ appropriate endorsement(s).
Valid driver’s license, required auto insurance, and reliable personal transportation.
Clearances
WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance (at employee’s expense).
