Based in Rochester, N.Y., as part of the University of Rochester Medical Center system, Wilmot serves approximately 3 million people in a 27-county region in western and central New York. Established in 1974, it has a long history of outstanding clinical care and research breakthroughs. Wilmot features an 87-bed flagship cancer center, with 13 outpatient locations.

The Head and Neck Comprehensive Care Center at Wilmot Cancer Institute is a truly multidisciplinary setting where a prospective Clinical Fellow will be collaborating with fellowship trained head and neck and microvascular reconstruction surgeons, ENT surgical residents, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Oncology Nurses, Registered Dietician, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and two dedicated head and neck cancer Speech Pathologists, amongst other disciplines as well.

Full Time 40 hours Speech Pathology

Position Summary:

We are seeking a qualified graduate of an accredited Speech-Language Pathology program to complete a 12-month, full-time, paid clinical fellowship. This fellowship will be focused on the evaluation and treatment of speech, swallowing and voice in individuals with a diagnosis of cancer of the head and neck. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing education and counseling regarding acute and latent effects of radiation on speech and swallowing function
  • Establishing prophylactic and rehabilitative voice and swallowing exercise programs
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary oncology team to ensure patients achieve adequate nutrition and hydration while optimizing functional swallowing outcomes pre/peri/post radiation (with/without chemotherapy)
  • Preoperative education and counseling regarding expected anatomic and functional changes to speech, voice, swallowing and respiration for a variety of head/neck surgical interventions, including total laryngectomy
  • Evaluation and rehabilitation of postoperative speech, voice and swallowing in both acute and outpatient settings
  • Voice restoration following total laryngectomy, including management of tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis
  • Instrumental evaluation of swallowing with video fluoroscopy and FEES
  • Comprehensive swallowing and voice evaluation and treatment in individuals with history of head/neck cancer diagnosis

The clinical fellow will be mentored by a certified speech-language pathologist and work as part of a team in an interdisciplinary head and neck cancer clinic. He or she will be responsible for completing evaluations and developing individualized treatment plans, participating in oncology team meetings, presenting an educational lecture to the speech-language pathology department, attending monthly departmental and educational meetings and completing daily documentation and billing through the electronic medical record system.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:

Interested candidates should have a strong interest and background in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with head and neck cancer as demonstrated through their graduate coursework and/ or clinical internships. The candidate must have completed their master’s level coursework at an accredited University program in speech-language pathology prior to beginning the position. The candidate must have a strong academic background, be highly motivated, demonstrate initiative and be independent and ready to work in a busy, fast-paced clinical environment.
