Program Development Intern

Position Type: Hourly Paid Internship
Duration: Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters 2020-21
Compensation: $16.39/hr, 14 hrs/week for 11 weeks (work study eligible)

The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) in the Center for Experiential Learning and Diversity (EXPD) promotes and facilitates opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research with faculty, provides a public forum for students to present their work, and offers advising and other resources. We currently seek an intern to support URP projects for up to 12 hours per week, preferably starting at the beginning of fall quarter 2018 and continuing through winter and spring 2019.

ABOUT THE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM

As part of the Center for Experiential Learning and Diversity (EXPD), the Undergraduate Research Program (URP) facilitates research experiences for undergraduates with faculty members across the disciplines. URP staff comprise a small, dynamic team who assist students in planning for an undergraduate research experience, identifying faculty mentors and projects, defining research goals, presenting and publishing research findings, obtaining academic credit, and seeking funding for their research. URP maintains a listing of current UW undergraduate research opportunities and related national programs, and offers the Summer Institute in the Arts & Humanities and co-hosts other summer STEM research programs. The Annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium provides a forum for students to present their work to the university community and the public. WORK HOURS, LOCATION, AND PAY RATE

Work schedule to be determined quarterly. Pay rate is $16.39 per hour, for up to 14 hours per week for 11 weeks (work study eligible). Work location is currently remote until further notice. The office is located in 171 Mary Gates Hall, the Center for Experiential Learning and Diversity (EXPD). Occasional early evening hours desired.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Program Development Intern serves as a member of the Undergraduate Research Program team. The internship will focus primarily on key development projects with opportunities to collaborate with staff on other activities depending on experience and interests. Primary and potential projects include:
1. Undergraduate Researchers Support Network Collaborate with URP staff and partners to coordinate student support events, including Research Community Connections.
2. Curriculum and Advising Development Support staff in revising and identifying new opportunities for curriculum building for students.
3. Undocumented Student- Friendly Website Using best practices and knowledge of policies and funding options, review website content and make recommendations for
incorporating content that helps undocumented students navigate quickly towards resources that are relevant towards supporting their undergraduate research experience.
4. Additional Program and Student Support Depending on interests, experience, and availability, other opportunities that can be incorporated into the internship include: support URP planning of events and activities that support undergraduate research engagement.

• Meet regularly with Assistant Director to report progress
• Collaborate with URP staff and committees
• Support planning meetings for designated projects
• Effective research of best practices, policies, and strategies to strengthen projects

QUALIFICATIONS

• Interest in experiential learning/research for undergraduate students
• Work well both as a member of a small team and independently.
• Leadership abilities including assertiveness, effective oral and written communication skills, and listening skills
• Creative problem solving skills, ability to balance a variety of duties, and attention to detail.
• Experience with computer applications, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.
• High comfort level with computer technology and software programs, including online forms and surveys (webqs).

ADDITIONAL DESIRED SKILLS

• Professional or personal experience with undergraduate research
• Qualitative research experience (e.g. focus groups, survey analysis)
• Graduate student research experience

Job Hours and Pay Rate

  • The pay rate for this position is $16.39/hour. Work schedule will be flexible around student classes.
  • Virtual schedule is flexible with the preference for availability during business hours, but upon return to in-person operations, schedule will be expected to take place between traditional business hours (between8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday). This job is on-going for the 2020-2021 academic school year, and applicants are expected to commit to the entire duration of the school year.
  • The Evans School will be moving into our newly renovated building, Parrington Hall, in
    September/October 2020. It is expected that this position will operate virtually for as long as the university and staff are doing so, but if and when in-person operations resume, would work primarily from the office in Parrington Hall.

Student Job Posting: Reader/Grader for COMMLD 511 Intro to User Centered Design for Fall 2020

The Communication Leadership graduate program (Comm Lead) is seeking a graduate student to serve as paid grading/feedback support for COMMLD 511: Introduction to User Centered Design in Autumn 2020. It is expected that this position will work approximately 14 hours per week during the term of this quarterly appointment (including class time), not to exceed 177 hours total. Position will be paid $24.00 per hour. There will be a limited number of hours of prep work during Summer 2020 (primarily in September), so the appointment will begin then with a flexible exact start date in early September.

Note: No in-person work is required for this role, given public health and safety recommendations. All work and meetings will be conducted virtually.

In this role, the successful candidate will work closely with instructor David Holmberg, attending the virtual class sessions (10 sessions, 6:00-9:50 PM on Mondays October 5-December 7), helping to monitor the discussion threads, and providing written feedback on a host of assignments.

  • Grades weekly discussion board entries
  • Grades weekly assignments
  • Short practice assignments applying UX skills learned in class. These will include foundational UX artifacts such as user interviews, journey maps, sketching, wireframing, taxonomies, and usability reports. All of the assignments will cumulatively build on each other toward the final project.
  • Grades 1-2 larger assignments
  • The final project involves 1) creating a working prototype of an app based on real user problems identified at the beginning of the quarter (and which will be the basis for all of the weekly assignments), 2) a case study which details out the steps involved to create the app.

Qualifications:

  • Current UW graduate student through Autumn 2020
  • Experience with UX or design thinking is a must. Candidates should display knowledge or coursework on UX

Comm Lead is a professional graduate program, offering Master of Communication Degrees in Digital Media as well as Communities & Networks. Students range in age from 22-40+ and many work full time, coming to school after hours. This course is an elective option that also meets the program’s Research Methods core requirement.

COMMLD 511: Introduction to User Centered Design

This course focuses on the fundamentals of user experience (UX) design, focusing on the skills and concepts needed to successfully design products and services for humans (otherwise known as the human-centered design process). We will learn the principles of design thinking, so that students come away from the class with a framework for understanding how to identify real user problems, design solutions for how to solve those problems, and then test those solutions with real people.

Over the course of the quarter, students will learn the foundations of user experience design, covering the entire cycle from ideation to implementation, and all of the design phases in between. We will cover a wide range of UX skills, including user research, user journeys, sketching, wireframing, principles of information architecture, prototyping, and usability studies. Additionally, we will consider the larger ethical questions raised by designing products in the digital age.
