We treat mostly neuro patients with stroke, BI, Parkinsons, MS, myopathies, and
encephalopathy. Our SLPs also treat patients with memory or cognitive declines that are new or
not at baseline. Our speech therapists provide a wide variety of treatments including: bedside
swallow assessment and progression of diet, cognitive therapy, language therapy, aphasia
treatment, dysarthria treatment, and functional situational awareness training.

Acute Care CF – Rochester, NY

CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP IN ACUTE CARE – Winter 2025

UR Medicine – Strong Memorial Hospital is a leading academic healthcare institution located in Rochester, NY between Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes region. The acute care team is seeking a full time, twelve-month clinical fellow to begin January 2025. Our clinical fellowship is structured to provide experience at all levels of acute care in a wide variety of specialty areas including but not limited to: neurology, cardiology, transplant, trauma, oncology, surgical, and hospital medicine. Our goal is to provide new clinicians with a strong foundation of experience and skills to become a well-rounded medical speech-language pathologist. The clinical fellow will become proficient in the completion of Modified Barium Swallow Studies and participate in FEES.

Job Description:

Full time, 40 hours Speech Pathology

January 2025 to December 2025

8AM – 4:30PM; Monday through Friday January- June, then transition to Sunday- Thursday July-December. Some holiday coverage.

Position Summary:

The Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Fellow (CF) will be mentored under the supervision of a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) who holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC). This position is responsible for providing diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients across the continuum of scope including swallowing, speech, language, cognition, voice and alternative means of communication across all hospital units.

Minimum Requirements:

· Completion of M.A. or M.S. degree in an accredited speech-language pathology program

· Previous clinical experience providing direct patient care in a medical setting and prior use of electronic medical records (EMR) is preferred.

Training and Responsibilities
New hires will receive extensive training and support in acquiring fluent skills in the below areas during their first year with the practice under the supervision of a highly trained and engaged mentor to provide individualized 1-1 supervision and support.

  • Evaluation and treatment of students with autism and complex communication needs
  • Development of goals, objectives, treatment plans and materials for the treatment of speech/language and cognitive impairments; including activities, low technology AAC, etc.
  • Data recording, billing and daily, quarterly, and annual written communication of client progress and current levels
  • Training on use of speech/language strategies, AAC Systems implementation, the science of learning, verbal behavior, barriers to learning, behavior modification and motivating, engaging and effective teaching for children asynchronous learning and complex communication needs
  • Attendance at meetings including IEPs, weekly staffing, training/education
  • AAC evaluations, programming and implementation
  • Provide training and ongoing support to clients, families, and education teams on the client’s AAC system and unique learning style, interests, and potential
  • A team player who enjoys collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of home therapists and ABA clinicians to ensure a family value-driven and holistic approach to each client’s communication goals
  • Support with behavioral interventions and motivation for learning

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Highly motivated to work with children with Autism and to learn the technology of speech generating devices and the application of principles from the science of learning.

  • Competitive compensation ($65-$85 per 1-hour session) with an average of 24 sessions per week. Hourly rate is based on experience. CFYs make $65 per hour and CCC-SLPs earn $70-$85 per hour. Annual compensation with 4 weeks of unpaid vacation ranges from: $74,000-$97,000.
