POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Provide itinerant speech language pathologist (SLP) services for students with communication disorders, in special and regular education classrooms, from preschool through 12th grade.

Clinical Director (Post 313920, at the level of Instructor, Assistant or Associate Professor)

The United Arab Emirates University invites applications for a Clinical Director
position (at the level of Instructor, Assistant or Associate Professor) with a
specialization in speech-language pathology (SLP), in the Department of Cognitive
Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The post is expected to be
available from September 2020, pending budgetary approval.

Requirements:

  • MA, MSc or PhD in Speech-Language Pathology or a related area
  • SLP certification and a minimum of 2 years of licensed clinical experience beyond the Clinical Fellowship
  • Expertise in assessment and intervention experience in communication and swallowing disorders and in at least two additional areas including, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), voice disorders, fluency disorders, early intervention, preschool language disorders, pediatric feeding disorders, autism and/or school-age speech and language disorders.
  • (Near-) Native competency in spoken and written Arabic

The successful applicant is expected to supervise the clinical training aspect of the
program in the three offered practica in our SLP program, including site evaluation,
clinical placement of students, co-supervision with preceptors, assessment and
evaluation of the clinical training process and so on. The program aims to create an
onsite SLP clinic in UAEU and, pending approval, the candidate would be expected to take a leading role in establishing and directing the clinic. In addition, the candidate is expected to teach clinical training related courses, such as Evaluation, Diagnosis & Report Writing. Finally, s/he should also be able to contribute to the teaching of other courses in the program as needed, advise students, and serve on committees. Although English is the language of instruction, the successful candidate must have near-native competence in oral and written Arabic in order to be able to communicate with stakeholders in clinical placement.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Speech Language Pathologist provides speech and language services in the areas of student assessment, direct therapy, training and consultation for staff, parents, and equipment fabrication or adaptation to enable students to function to their highest possible level within the educational system. The Speech Language Pathologist is also part of the District Evaluation/Assessment Team and is responsible for evaluation of new referral students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Special Education and in collaboration with building principals, the Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for:

  1. Evaluating students with communication disorders including receptive-expressive language, articulation, voice, and fluency to determine eligibility and need for speech/language service.
  2. Documenting communication skill deficits and their impact on the student’s educational performance.
  3. Recommending, establishing, providing and evaluating a course of interventions specific to the diagnosed communication disorder consistent with an educational service delivery model.
  4. Working with the classroom team to develop, implement and evaluate classroom based instructional programs for students in special education classrooms to enhance communication skills that will support academic progress.
  5. Developing and implementing an efficient service delivery schedule including individual, small group and large group instruction; co-treat with OT/PT staff when appropriate for individual student needs.
  6. Developing and implementing a data management system to collect and record on-going student progress toward accomplishment of IEP goals and objectives.

RELATIONSHIPS

The Speech Language Pathologist reports directly to the Executive and Assistant Director of Special Education and maintains relationships with building principals and program directors, personnel/staff members, and other relationships as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. M.A. or M.S. Degree in Speech Language Pathology.
  2. Must possess or be eligible for Washington State ESA certification as Speech Language Pathologist/Audiologist.

  4. Successful experience as a Speech Language Pathologist preferred.
