The South Texas Veterans Health Care System Speech-Language Pathology section is pleased to announce two Clinical Fellowship opportunities for 2024-2025. The goal of the Clinical Fellowship is to provide experience in the Speech-Language Pathology scope of practice along a broad continuum of care. These positions are temporary appointments, not to exceed one year. Applicants must be US citizens and have graduated from a fully accredited Speech-Language Pathology graduate program and be eligible for a Texas Speech-Language Pathology Intern License.

The Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, a level 1A – high complexity facility, is the primary training site and will offer the clinical fellow experience in evaluation and treatment of cognitive communication, language, motor speech, swallowing, and voice disorders. Clinical rotations will include outpatient clinic, acute inpatient care and inpatient Polytrauma Rehabilitation. Training will include:

  • Fluoroscopic/Endoscopic swallow evaluations
  • Stroboscopic voice evaluations
  • ALS multidisciplinary clinic
  • Gender affirming voice therapy
  • Evaluation and treatment of patients with head and neck cancer
  • Evaluation and treatment of patients with TBI and disorders of consciousness
  • Evaluation and training for use of assistive technology
  • Palliative care and hospice

The New Mexico VA Health Care System is pleased to announce a speech-language pathology clinical fellowship (CF) position for the 2024-2025 year. The Clinical Fellowship provides a well-rounded experience in the evaluation and treatment of adults in all areas of medical speech pathology including dysphagia, speech and language disorders, cognitive disorders, voice disorders, and tracheostomy. Specialty areas in head & neck cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, TBI, trach/vent, AAC, and transgender voice are also offered. Our department serves inpatients, outpatients (in-clinic and telehealth), and rehabilitation residents of the Community Living Center.

Over the course of this year long rotation, the Clinical Fellow can expect to have a combination of inpatient and outpatient experience to include training in swallow evaluations (bedside, fluoroscopic, and endoscopic), endoscopic voice evaluations (flexible and rigid), post laryngectomy voice restoration, language and cognitive therapy, participation in comprehensive rehab teams for ALS, Parkinson’s, and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), as well as assistive technology for augmentative communication. The CF will work with a variety of specialty services and teams via interdisciplinary rounds and collaboration, including: Otolaryngology, General Medicine Hospitalist teams, Nursing, Neurology, Neuropsychology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Nutrition, SCI, and Primary Care.

Located in the high desert of northern New Mexico, Albuquerque experiences four seasons a year which allows for the enjoyment of one of the most diverse geographical regions in the country year-round. Running along the Rio Grande trail, hiking, mountain and road biking, climbing, boating, and winter sports are all within a 20 minute to 2-hour drive. Albuquerque has a unique and rich culture, southwest cuisine, and thriving local brewery scene. The University and downtown have a variety of shops, restaurants, and monthly activities. The Speech-Language Pathology Service at Cincinnati VA Medical Center offers one-year Clinical Fellowship opportunities in Speech-Language Pathology. Clinical fellows are full-time, funded employees who have the opportunity to achieve their clinical learning goals, including development of advanced practice skills, while being mentored by experienced clinicians. Fellows work and learn in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings within the Medical Center, and they engage in interprofessional practice with specialty services including Neurology, Otolaryngology, Medicine, Oncology, TBI/Polytrauma, Nutrition, Nursing, and other rehabilitation therapies. Hands-on clinical teaching and supervision allow Fellows to develop the skills and abilities needed to manage a full-time, complex patient caseload. Fellows also engage in a variety of didactic and academic learning opportunities, including participation in interdisciplinary and community SLP journal clubs, attendance at College of Medicine Grand Rounds, surgical observations, onsite training in flexible endoscopy, and opportunities for postgraduate learning through in-person and virtual trainings and conferences. In addition, Fellows will participate in clinical research and/or quality improvement programs that can train skills necessary for a future career incorporating clinical research.

The Speech Pathology Section serves acute and critical care inpatients, outpatients, and residents of a Community Living Center. Fellows will gain experience and provide services in all general areas of medical speech pathology, including evaluation and treatment of individuals with dysphagia, speech and language disorders, cognitive disorders, voice disorders, and tracheostomy. They will also gain experience in subspecialty areas of speech language pathology, which may vary according to the specific professional goals and interests of the selected Fellows. Overall, we are seeking candidates with a strong interest in medical speech pathology and a desire to grow and develop professionally in a fast-paced, learning-oriented medical setting.

A year-long CF position in speech-language pathology is available through the Geriatric Research Education andClinical Center (GRECC) at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. This will be a blended fellowship experience incorporating training through the Speech Pathology section and the GRECC.

The Speech Pathology Section offers services to inpatient and outpatient Veterans in a Level 1B (second highest medical complexity) acute care hospital comprised of 113 inpatient hospital beds (including residents of the Community Living Center and hospice care unit) and a 16-bed intensive care unit. The CF will interact professionally with specialty services including Neurology, ENT, Med/Surg, Nutrition, Nursing, and other rehabilitation therapies. All CFs will gain experience and provide services in all areas of medical speech pathology, including evaluation/treatment of individuals with dysphagia (videofluoroscopy), speech and language disorders, cognitive disorders and voice disorders. They will also gain specialized experience in cognitive rehabilitation for veterans with mTBI, neurogenic communication disorders, endoscopic procedures (FEES and laryngovideostroboscopy), head and neck cancer, total laryngectomy education and tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis maintenance. CFs will be a part of interdisciplinary clinics, collaborating with ENT physicians and dieticians as part of the Interdisciplinary Voice Clinic, Dysphagia Clinic and Intensive Dysphagia Treatment Program. The CF will also have the opportunity to explore the use of high resolution pharyngeal manometry as part of the dysphagia profile.

The CF will also participate in several weekly Geriatric-based interdisciplinary clinics. Trainees will be integrated directly into these interdisciplinary geriatrics teams and, through administration of standardized screening tools, will identify those Veterans who would benefit from additional dysphagia, speech/language, and/or cognitive intervention from the Speech Pathology service. Additionally, the CF trainee will complete a dysphagia-focused research project through integration with Dr. Rogus-Pulia’s research program. We are seeking candidates with a strong interest in medical speech pathology, geriatrics, and dysphagia research, as well as a desire to grow
professionally in a fast-paced, learning-oriented medical setting.

Our hospital also serves as a Polytrauma Clinic Support Team (Level III). In addition, the Speech-Language Pathologists coordinate the Comprehensive ALS Interdisciplinary Team at our facility. The Clinical Fellow will participate in a robust program targeting management of speech, swallowing, and cognition in patients with Parkinson’s Disease.

The Miami VA Healthcare System Audiology and Speech Pathology (ASP) Service is excited to announce a full time Clinical Fellowship opportunity for 2024-2025!

The Speech Pathology program at the Miami VA provides a wide range of services and a dynamic learning environment. We are a Level III Polytrauma Clinic Support Team and are part of the CARF accredited acute rehab unit.

The Clinical Fellow will provide diagnostic and intervention services to outpatients (including telehealth), inpatients, and Community Living Center (CLC) residents. The Clinical Fellow will work and collaborate closely with specialty and interdisciplinary teams including Otolaryngology, Radiology, Nutrition, Geriatrics, Spinal Cord, Neurology, Critical Care, Military to VA (polytrauma), Radiation-Oncology, Home-Based Primary Care and Palliative Care. We provide the opportunity to gain experience with instrumental exams (fluoroscopy, FEES, videostroboscopy), cognitive-communication evaluation and treatment, as well as various special populations (head & neck cancer, post laryngectomy voice restoration, and neurodegenerative disorders). In addition, the clinical fellow will also gain acute rehabilitation experience on our Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program (CIIRP) unit.
