Required qualifications include:

  • A doctorate in Communication Disorders or a related discipline
  • Curricular experience with diverse populations
  • The ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from various backgrounds
  • Tenured/tenure-track candidates must have an active research program which reflects scholarship in multiculturalism
  • ASHA certification and experience with online pedagogy are strongly preferred.

Portland VA SLP Fellowship

Portland VA Speech-Language Pathology Training Program:

The training program is funded by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations. These fellowships are available only for US citizens.

Clinical Fellows complete the following four, 3 month, rotations with three separate mentors (not necessarily in the order listed). Although there is some overlap in training, each of the first three rotations provides a primary area of emphasis. Students are provided with required readings on advanced topics and attend various colloquia, symposiums and seminars.

The program provides training in:

  • Fluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing and FEES
  • Evaluation of voice with use of acoustic voice analysis systems (e.g. Kay CSL, Praat, LSVT Companion Software), direct and fiberoptic laryngoscopy,
    and stroboscopy
  • Evaluation and treatment for the use of trachea-esophageal speaking valves
  • Evaluation of speech, language, and cognition
  • Evaluation and implementation of AAC devices and cognitive prosthetics.

Training occurs in the following locations:

  • ENT-including Head & Neck Surgery (SICU)
  • General Medicine Teams 1-5
  • Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • Community Living Center, Vancouver Campus: Rehabilitation Unit, Skilled Nursing Care Unit, Long-term care, Hospice and Palliative care
  • Polytrauma Clinic
  • ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic
  • Dysphagia Outpatient Clinics
  • General SLP Outpatient Clinics

The program requires each CFY to develop and present a presentation on a topic of their choice, either to our internal staff or to one of the interdisciplinary teams. Observation, didactic teaching, and supervision are provided throughout each rotation with the goal of progressively weaning the student toward independence. In addition to daily ongoing feedback, each student meets with their mentor weekly to discuss the student’s progress along with any other issues of concern.

An academic and clinical professor can speak to both areas, if applicable. Letters of recommendation can be emailed to Dr. Larson directly by the professor or can be included
    in the student’s application. If emailed, “Letter of Recommendation for Name of Applicant” should be included in the subject line.

Please concatenate all documents into a single .pdf, and “Save as” as an Adobe Acrobat optimized file type to compress or use an online .pdf compression program. If you would like to encrypt your application, please request a password to use from Dr. Larson by sending an email request. Note, the VA server may reject a large file size. As such, please also send a separate, brief email to Dr. Larson stating that the application was sent.

Tour a United States Navy Helicopter

Navy MH-60S Helicopter Fly-In!

Tour Information:

  • A Sikorsky MH-60S Helicopter from NAS Whidbey Island will land at the University of Washington IMA Sports Field #4 at approximately 2:30 pm
  • There will be an info session at Noon in ECE 303 to discuss Naval aviation, nuclear power, surface warfare, medical, and other exciting Navy career opportunities. Attendees will be issued a “VIP pass” for first access to the helicopter and crew upon landing. Pizza and drinks will be provided.
  • Time permitting, anyone unable to attend the info session will also have a chance to tour the MH-60S and speak with the aircrew about Naval aviation.
  • The event will conclude with a presentation by a Navy Blue Angels pilot in GUG 220
  • All events are completely free, with no cost or obligation required.

**A Flight Simulator will be at the helicopter landing
for students to have a shot at flying a military aircraft**

Tour schedule:

  • 12:00 – Informational Brief and Lunch in ECE 303.
  • 1:30 – Walk to IMA Sports Field #4 (along 45th Ave NE)
  • 2:30 – MH-60S arrives and allows students to tour helicopter. Aircrew available to answer any questions about Naval Aviation.
  • 4:00 – MH-60S departs
  • 5:00 – Special guest presentation by Blue Angels pilot CDR John Hiltz (GUG 220)

Call for Recipes: Husky Cookbook

Building Community Through Food and Storytelling

Calling for recipes from UW students, staff and faculty on all campuses!

What is one food or food dish that represents your identity? How does this food item embrace and/or showcase who you are? Created by students for the Husky community, the Husky Cookbook is a collection of recipes and food stories gathered from UW students, staff, and faculty. The project aims to unite members across the broader UW community through food and their stories told through food.

Not only is food a way to break barriers and build relationships, but it’s also a way in which stories of culture and traditions are shared. Through print and online mediums, this Husky Cookbook aims to showcase the diverse members of our UW community, foster a sense of community by encouraging dialogue on how our identities are shaped by food traditions and culture, and promote cooking and sharing of meals.

Eligibility:

UW student (undergraduate, graduate or professional), faculty and staff from all campuses are encouraged to apply.

Steps to Submit to the Husky Cookbook:

  • Choose one food item/dish that highlights and showcases your identity; this is open to your interpretation (your cultural identity, upbringing/background, preferences/values, etc.).
  • Submit a clear, accurate and reproducible recipe of the food item/dish. Original and/or family recipes are welcomed, but not mandatory. If you find a recipe online or in a printed source, please provide a reference.
  • Submit a 100 to 150-word response that addresses how the food item/dish represents your identity. This is a creative writing response. Please let your voice shine through!
