NW CENTER FOR VOICE AND SWALLOWING CLINICAL FELLOWSHIPS (CF) IN SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY 2020-2021

Full-time clinical fellowships (2) are being offered at the NW Center for Voice and Swallowing, Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. The primary purpose of the program is to train professionals in the areas of voice and swallowing disorders. Training in direct patient care to patients (adult and pediatric) with voice disorders; alaryngeal voice restoration, speech and swallowing disorders after head and neck cancer and adult dysphagia.

Training program description for Speech-Language Pathology:

The training program is primarily clinical in nature. The NWCVS at OHSU has a faculty of 10 speech-language pathologists, 2 laryngologists, 1 physician’s assistant and 1 laryngology fellow. Training experiences include interdisciplinary team assessments of adults and children with voice disorders and vocal cord dysfunction, adult dysphagia, alaryngeal rehabilitation as well as, speech and swallowing disorders in the head and neck cancer patient. Independent study and collaborative research is part of the training program. Didactic offerings, both at the NW Center for Voice and Swallowing, Otolaryngology and throughout the greater Oregon Health & Science University augment the Fellowship experience.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have the minimum of a master’s degree in speech-language pathology and meet all the requirements for certification except the Clinical Fellowship.  Applicants must meet all the requirements for the Oregon Board of Examiners Conditional License in Speech-Language Pathology.

Terms

The stipend for 2020-2021 is 50K in addition to health benefits. This is a 12 month appointment.  The beginning date for the fellowship is August 24, 2020 and it ends August 20, 2021.

DESCRIPTION

This is a regular, full-time, exempt, day shift position.

You are a licensed Speech Language Pathologist that is responsible for providing evaluation and treatment of students ages 5-22 in accordance with approved policies, procedures, and protocols. You enjoy planning, implementing, and coordinating comprehensive therapy. You thrive in an interdisciplinary team setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES (SLP)

• Ongoing assessment of designated students’ speech and language needs
• Writing individual speech and language goals and objectives
• Planning and implementation of necessary speech therapy
• Supervise and/or support other speech therapy staff
• Collaborate and coordinate with all team members and attend parent conferences
• Carry out behavioral interventions with children and/or adolescents, which could include visually/auditorily monitoring clients, evading or containing physical aggression, lifting, and pursuing clients who might be running away
• Facilitate open communication, the team process within the Agency, and a positive attitude toward program function and general Agency goals

  c. Working knowledge of skill and communication training materials
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Ability to think and act autonomously in a variety of situations.

This is a collaborative grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education to prepare doctoral students as researchers and future faculty with expertise in early assessment and intervention for children with disabilities from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds. This program is a collaboration between Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. Faculty from both sites will train and mentor students in research.

JOB GOAL: The speech and language pathologist shall help to reduce or eliminate speech and language disorders that interfere with the individual student’s ability to derive full benefit from the district’s educational program.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Inform administrators, teachers and other school personnel of speech and/or language services for the school year.
2. Organize and implement programs to identify and serve students with speech and language
   impairments.
3. Provide the director with requested information to assist in budget preparation.
4. Submit requests to purchase materials for speech and language services.
5. Provide in-service training in use of materials and techniques to remediate speech and language disorders
6. Utilize school resources and outside agencies to meet speech-language program objectives.
7. Be accountable for supplies, equipment, and resources issued in delivery of services.
8. Plan office work schedule to allow sufficient time for program planning and implementation, report writing, and record completion.
9. Formulate short and long-range therapeutic goals to meet individual needs.
10. Serve as case manager for students only identified with speech-language and serve on ER and IEP teams for students with speech-language impairments as a secondary or related service.
11. Assist teachers in supporting speech and language development programs.
12. Maintain service/treatment records.
13. Coordinate therapy with classroom teacher’s curriculum or home environment.
14. Actively participate in Evaluation Report team meetings.
15. Provide supervision, training and instructional planning for speech aides.
16. Provide service dates for Medicaid billing of eligible students.
17. The above performance responsibilities are not all-inclusive and may be altered or added to by the director of the Big Sky Special Needs Cooperative.
