About the Position: 
The Audiologist is responsible for all activities within the scope of practice for Audiology in
Louisiana and includes diagnostics, rehabilitation, hearing instrument dispensing and patient
education as well as preventive hearing care services. Applying candidates need to be
conversant in all areas of audiology and be able to practice independently with confidence.
Qualified candidates must be Doctorate level Audiologists appropriately licensed in the state of
Louisiana.

Gain hands-on experience with the Hearing, Speech & Deaf Center (HSDC)!

HSDC is a local nonprofit that provides Audiology and Speech services among other support services to people facing communication challenges due to hearing or speech.

Currently looking for volunteers in the Speech, Language & Literacy Department

  • 2-6 hrs/wk
  • Asking for a 3 month commitment
  • Time set aside for observing speech-therapy sessions
  • Other volunteering tasks include:
    • Helping to schedule appointments
    • Prep therapy materials
    • Learn about Electronic Medical Records by entering case notes
    • Answer phones and greet clients
    • Connect patients to billing to get insurance/payment questions answered

  • DUE:  December 15, 2017 (next Friday)
  • Summary:  Provides $2000 – $12,000 in funding to women who hold a bachelor’s degree and are preparing to advance or change careers or reenter the workforce. Primary consideration is given to women of color and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields.

  1. UW Retirement Association (UWRA) Scholarship on Aging
  • DUE:  January 19, 2018 at 5:00 pm PDT
  • Summary:  Four, $4000 scholarships will be awarded to students with an academic or career emphasis on aging. Evaluation factors include demonstrated experience/commitment to paid or volunteer work benefitting older adults, academic performance, communication skills and financial need (as determined by FAFSA).
  • Eligibility:  Undergraduate and graduate students at all three UW campuses, including international and HB 1079 students, are eligible to apply.
  1. Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowships
  • DUE:  January 2, 2018 at noon PDT
  • Summary:   $18,000 stipend plus tuition. An annual award that may be renewed for a total of three years.
  • Eligibility:  U.S. citizen, doctoral student with an outstanding undergrad record, financial need (FAFSA filed), conducting research in the U.S. in a field of study in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences (including law, medicine, engineering, architecture, or other formal professional training).
  • Special notes:  The selection committee has a strong prefence for supporting research vs. practice doctorate endeavours.

FEBRUARY DEADLINES

  1. UW Retirement Association (UWRA) Graduate Fellowship In Aging
  • DUE:  February 1, 2018 at noon PDT
  • Summary:  This is a one-quarter fellowship that supports graduate students of outstanding academic merit who have a demonstrated academic and personal interest in aging-related issues or concerns. The fellowship will provide a monthly stipend, GAIP health insurance, and a waiver of state tuition for up to 18 credits (excluding U-PASS and international student fee) in the quarter when the student takes the fellowship. The choice of the quarter will be left to the discretion of the graduate student in consultation with his or her department.
  • Eligibility:  Eligible students must bematriculated in a UW graduate degree tuition program (fee-based programs are not eligible) and not in their last year of study. The recipient of the award must also be enrolled in full-time credits (at least 10) during the fellowship quarter.
  1. CAPCSD Frances Laven Scholarship
  • DUE:  January 5, 2018 by midnight EDT (9:00 pm PDT).
  • Summary:  $5,000
  • Eligibility:  Master’s or Doctoral student at a CAPCSD institution (which we are) demonstrating exemplary service. Examples of service may include (but are not limited to) community service, service to the department or university, or service to the greater discipline.
  • Special note:  The Department may only nominate one student across the MS and AuD programs for this award. If you are interested, please submit the following information electronically to Julie Leonardo no later than Friday December 29, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.  The department will then select one invidual to put forward for the nomination.

Seattle Children’s Speech Pathology Webinar

A series of webinars are being presented by our SLP colleagues at Seattle Children’s in the upcoming months. These webinars are open to all faculty and students interested.  The 4 areas of focus are Voice, Velopharyngeal Dysfunction, AAC and Fluency. They are also offering opportunities for CEUs.

Description
A series of three, 2-hour, online pediatric speech-language pathology training sessions and one 90-minute online pediatric speech-language pathology training session will occur via GoToWebinar.com for the purpose of creating an opportunity for learning and dialogue for speech-language pathologists and other professionals serving children with communication disorders. The purpose of this series is to provide educational opportunities to professionals across Washington State serving children with communication deficits.

Who Should Attend:
Speech-Language Pathologists, and other professionals who serve children with communication disorders and who are interested in learning more about considerations for evaluating and treating special populations.

Learning Objectives:
1. Learn to evaluate voice disorders in children and determine a child’s candidacy for treatment and methods to implement voice therapy.
2. Explain the categories of velopharyngeal dysfunction and pathways to improve structure and/or strategies to improve function.
3. Identify strategies and options for a child with autism for a child who has autism to communicate using the iPad as an AAC device.
4. Learn techniques to use in a treatment program
to help persons who stutter speak with improved
fluency.

SLP INTERN – Tacoma Public Schools

Expected Start Date:  January 2, 2018

Salary Level: $18.66 per/hour

Additional Information: Internships are anticipated to be 3-6 months.  Duration of internships will be flexible based on individuals need to serve as either semester or under quarter system.

Summary:
This position works under the supervision of ESA certified Speech-Language Pathologist, providing evaluation, consultation, intervention and treatment services for students suspected of or identified as demonstrating disabilities and need for special education services.

Responsibilities:
1. Conducts, in conjunction with the Speech-Language Pathologist, a review of physician’s or audiologist’s referrals, student’s medical records, speech and language skills as related to educational, medical, social and psychological factors to determine speech and language therapy treatment requirements.
2. Consults, under the direction of the Speech-Language Pathologist, with families and school staff regarding appropriate research-based treatments for students with such needs.
3. Assists in the analysis and interpretation of assessment results to plan and prepare written treatment program to restore communicative efficiency of students with communication problems of organic and non-organic etiology.
4. Assists in providing counseling, guidance and language development to students with speech disabilities; may instruct students to monitor their own speech and provide ways to practice new skills.
5. Participates in the administration, scoring and interpretation of hearing and speech tests; may evaluate effects of treatment at various stages and may recommend adjustments to treatment to achieve maximum benefit, under the supervision of a certified Speech-Language Pathologist.
6. Maintains current knowledge of state and federal legislation related to special education and students with disabilities; enhances personal knowledge through participation in case conferences, inservice training, professional organizations, and District meetings.
7. Consults with school staff regarding special education law as it relates to eligibility for special education services and disciplinary requirements for students with disabilities.
8. Writes evaluation reports and maintains additional required documentation through the District’s adopted online special education reporting system, which will be reviewed by a certified Speech-Language Pathologist.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

1. Performs related work as assigned.

CONDITIONS

May be required to deal with distraught student/parents; visual and mental concentration on details and precision required; may be exposed to infectious diseases; required to travel to assigned schools.

Working with a stroke patient

Looking for a student to provide general conversation for our dad who is recovering from a stroke. We will discuss the challenges of accurate identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). We will explore additional issues, such as educational placement decisions and treatment approaches.
